OneNote 2007 and later, plus .onepkg notebook exports. Files stay on this device.

An online OneNote viewer that never sees your notes

Most online viewers send your document to a server, render it there and send a picture back. This one works the other way round. The whole viewer is a single web page. When you pick a .one file, your browser reads it from your disk and rebuilds every page itself.

100% privacy focused

No upload, no account and no server. Open the page, turn off your internet and it still works. Safe for client notes, research, case files and anything confidential.

Works on any computer

Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook. Anything with a modern browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari can open a OneNote file here.

Save what you need

Download a page as a self-contained HTML file. Save the pictures and attachments, or export every page of every section as plain text.

Whole notebooks at once

Open a .onepkg export or a notebook folder. Sections keep OneNote's order, section groups stay nested and every page appears in one list.

Works on every device with a browser

Short answer: Univik Online OneNote Viewer opens .one and .onepkg files on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. It needs only a modern browser such as Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.

MACOpen a OneNote file on Mac

OneNote for Mac opens notebooks that are already in the cloud, not a loose .one file sitting in your Downloads folder. Drop the file into this page in Safari or Chrome and every page displays, including a section a colleague sent you as an attachment.

IPHONEOpen a OneNote file on iPhone

Tap the .one attachment in Mail, Files or WhatsApp, choose Save to Files, then open this page in Safari and tap Choose OneNote files. Pinch to zoom and swipe through pages.

IPADOpen a OneNote file on iPad

iPadOS Safari gives you the full viewer with the page list, zoom and downloads. Save the file to Files first, then pick it from the box at the top of this page.

ANDROIDOpen a OneNote file on Android

Works in Chrome, Samsung Internet and Firefox on Android phones and tablets. Pick the file from Downloads or Google Drive. Pages are drawn on the phone itself, so it also works offline once the page has loaded.

CHROMEBOOKOpen a OneNote file on Chromebook

ChromeOS cannot run the OneNote desktop app, and the web app only shows notebooks that are already synced to your account. This page reads the file itself. Choose it from Files or Google Drive.

LINUXOpen a OneNote file on Linux

Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint or any distribution with Firefox or Chromium. Microsoft ships no OneNote for Linux at all. Text, pictures, tables, note tags and ink are rendered in the browser.

WINDOWSOpen a OneNote file in a browser on Windows

Use this page for a quick look in Edge or Chrome when you do not want to import the section into your own notebook. To turn notes into PDF, Word or images in bulk, install the Univik ONE Converter.

MOBILEOneNote viewer for phones and tablets

The OneNote mobile app signs in and syncs, it does not open a loose .one file. This page does, with no app store download. It adapts to small screens and keeps the file on the phone.

What the online viewer shows

The viewer reads the OneNote file format directly and rebuilds each page from the objects stored inside it.

Sections and pages

Every section with its pages in OneNote's order, subpages indented under their parent and section groups kept nested.

Text and layout

Outlines sit where you left them on the page, with font, size, bold, italic, colour, highlight, alignment, bullets and numbering.

Pictures

Embedded PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, WebP and SVG pictures at the size OneNote stored them.

Ink and handwriting

Pen strokes drawn as vector lines with their colour, width and transparency. Text OneNote recognised from handwriting is searchable.

Tables and note tags

Tables with column widths, borders and cell shading, plus to-do boxes, stars, question marks and your own note tags.

Attachments and links

Files attached to a page can be saved with one click, and hyperlinks stay clickable.

How to view a OneNote file online

Pick the file

Drag a .one or .onepkg file onto the box at the top of this page, or click Choose OneNote files. You can also open a whole notebook folder.

Read it in your browser

Sections and pages appear on the left. Click a page or use the arrow keys, zoom in to check small print and search to find a word across every page.

Download if you need to

Save the page as HTML. You can also save a picture or an attachment from the Images tab, or export all the text as a .txt file.

Questions people ask about viewing OneNote files online

Direct answers about opening Microsoft OneNote files in a browser, on any device, without OneNote.

Is my OneNote file uploaded anywhere?
Nothing leaves your device

No. This page contains the whole viewer. Your browser reads the file from your device and draws the pages itself. There is no server involved and the page keeps working with the internet switched off.

How do I open a .one file online in my browser?

Open this page in any browser, drop the .one file into the box at the top and it displays. You do not need OneNote, a Microsoft account or any download. It also opens sections that OneNote itself refuses because they are not part of a synced notebook.

Can I view a OneNote file online for free?

Yes. Univik Online OneNote Viewer is free, has no page limit and needs no sign up. Saving a page as HTML, saving pictures and exporting text are free as well.

How do I open a .onepkg notebook package?
Unpacks into every section

Choose it the same way as a section. A package is a compressed archive of a whole notebook, made with File, Export, Notebook in OneNote for Windows. It is unpacked in memory and every section, section group and page appears on the left.

How do I open a OneNote file on a Mac?

Open this page in Safari or Chrome on macOS and choose the .one file. OneNote for Mac has no File, Open for a loose section, so the browser is the simplest way to read one that arrived by email or on a USB drive.

How do I open a OneNote file on iPhone or iPad?

Save the attachment to the Files app, open this page in Safari, tap Choose OneNote files and pick it. The pages open in the same tab. Pinch to zoom, swipe to change pages and use Download to save a page.

Why does the viewer say a section is password protected?
Every page is encrypted

OneNote encrypts every page of a protected section, so no viewer can read it without the password. Open the section in OneNote, right click the section tab, choose Password Protection then Remove Password, save the file and open it here again.

Which OneNote versions does the online viewer open?
Every one opens here

Sections written by OneNote 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021 and Microsoft 365 for Windows. Sections downloaded from the OneDrive website use a different internal layout and open here too, where most tools stop with an error.

Can I open a whole OneNote notebook folder at once?
Sections, groups and contents

Yes. Click Open a notebook folder and pick the folder that holds the .one files. The viewer reads Open Notebook.onetoc2 for the section order and treats subfolders as section groups. The OneNote_RecycleBin folder is skipped.

Where do I find .one files on my computer?

Local notebooks live under Documents\OneNote Notebooks. Automatic backups live under %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\Backup. To get a file out of a cloud notebook, open the OneDrive website, right click the section and choose Download. You can also export the whole notebook as .onepkg from OneNote for Windows.

Why is a page blank or missing its pictures?
Photos show, metafiles cannot

Three common causes. The section was downloaded from OneDrive before it finished syncing, so the page content is not in the file yet. The picture is a pasted metafile (EMF or WMF), which browsers cannot draw, so a placeholder appears in the right place. Or the picture lives in a name_onefiles folder beside the section and only the .one file was chosen. Open the whole notebook folder in that case.

Does it show ink and handwriting?
Drawn as vector lines

Yes. Pen strokes are drawn as vector lines with their stored colour, width and transparency. If OneNote recognised the handwriting, that text is used for search and travels with a saved HTML page.

Is it safe to use an online OneNote viewer for confidential notes?

Only if the viewer does not upload the file. Most online viewers send your document to their server. Univik Online OneNote Viewer never does. The file is read and displayed on your own device, which makes it safe for client work, research notes and personal records.

How large a OneNote file can the browser viewer handle?

Sections of several hundred megabytes open in a few seconds because only the page structure is read up front. Each page is drawn when you click it. The practical limit is the memory your browser gives one tab, usually 2 GB or more on a desktop.

Do I need to download or install anything?

No. There is no app, extension or plugin. Open the page and choose the file. It works the same on a desktop computer, a phone or a tablet.

Can the online viewer convert OneNote to PDF or Word?

The online viewer saves single pages as HTML and exports all the text. For PDF, Word, HTML or image output across a whole notebook in one run, use the Univik ONE Converter.

Does it work offline?
Works with no internet

Yes. Once the page has loaded in your browser you can disconnect from the internet and still open files. The viewer never contacts a server.
