 About the Format

What is a QIF File?

The universal personal and small business finance format that Quicken, GnuCash, YNAB and dozens of apps have used for decades.

QIF Explained

QIF stands for Quicken Interchange Format. Intuit created it in the 1980s as a portable, plain-text way for Quicken to export and import financial transactions. It became the de facto standard for personal finance data exchange and is still widely used today.

A QIF file is structured as a series of one-letter field codes followed by values. Each transaction ends with a caret (^) character. The file opens with a !Type: declaration that tells the reader which kind of account the data represents.

QIF files carry the .qif extension and are generated by Quicken exports, bank download portals and legacy finance software including Microsoft Money, Moneydance and KMyMoney.

 Key Features

Why Choose Univik QIF Converter

Built for individuals, bookkeepers and small business owners who need reliable, accurate QIF data extraction.

Split Transactions

Split Transaction Support

A single QIF transaction can be split across multiple categories using the S, $ and E field codes. Most converters flatten or lose this data. Univik QIF Converter reads every split line and exports each to its own row in Excel and CSV, with the parent transaction amount and date preserved on each row.

Category Hierarchy

Full Category Hierarchy

Quicken categories use colon notation for sub-categories: Utilities:Electricity or Food:Groceries:Organic. The converter maps parent and child categories to separate columns so you can filter, group and pivot by any level of your expense hierarchy in Excel.

Offline

100% Offline and Private

Your QIF file contains real account numbers, transaction amounts and payee names. Univik QIF Converter processes everything locally on your Windows machine. No internet connection required, no files uploaded, no cloud parsing. Your financial data stays on your device from start to finish.

Date Formats

Flexible Date Format Detection

QIF date formats vary by bank and region: MM/DD/YY, DD/MM/YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY and others. The converter auto-detects the format from the file and lets you confirm or override before export. European decimal comma files are also handled correctly without manual pre-processing.

Legacy Files

Legacy QIF File Recovery

Microsoft Money was discontinued in 2009, leaving millions of users with QIF archives they can no longer open in their original software. The converter reads QIF files from all Microsoft Money versions, handling Windows-1252 encoding, legacy date formats and Money-specific field quirks automatically.

Investment Files

Investment Account Files

QIF !Type:Invst files store portfolio transactions including buy, sell, dividend, reinvestment and interest records. The converter reads the action code, security name, quantity, price and commission and maps them to clean Excel columns, ready for portfolio performance analysis or tax calculation.

 How It Works

From QIF to Clean Data in 3 Steps

Open your file, choose your format, export. No spreadsheet formulas, no manual copying, no data loss.

1

Open Your QIF File

Drag and drop your .qif file into the converter or browse for it. The software instantly reads the account type declaration, parses every field code and displays a live preview of your transactions before you export anything.

2

Set Your Preferences

Confirm the date format, decimal separator and output format. Apply optional filters by date range, category, cleared status or amount to export only the transactions you need. Split transactions show individually in the preview.

3

Export and Import

Click "Convert" and your output file is ready in seconds. Import the CSV directly into Xero, Sage or Wave. Upload the QBO file to QuickBooks Online. Open the Excel file for budget analysis. All category data and memos carry through cleanly.

 Category Handling

Categories That Actually Work

QIF categories are the most valuable part of the file. The converter preserves every level of the hierarchy so your reports stay meaningful.

Quicken Category Hierarchy

Food
Groceries
Restaurants
Takeaway
Utilities
Electricity
Gas
Internet
Income
Salary
Freelance
Interest

Each colon in the L field creates a new level. The converter exports Parent and Sub-category to separate Excel columns for flexible grouping and filtering.

How Splits Export to Excel

DatePayeeCategoryAmount
Single split transaction expanded to 3 rows:
15 JanSuperstoreFood:Groceries-38.50
15 JanSuperstoreHousehold:Cleaning-12.20
15 JanSuperstoreFood:Toiletries-9.30
Total-60.00

Each split row carries the parent transaction's date and payee so every row is independently meaningful in pivot tables.

From rescuing decades-old finance archives to preparing tax records, QIF conversion solves real, recurring problems.

Microsoft Money Migration

Microsoft Money Migration

Microsoft discontinued Money in 2009. Millions of users still have QIF files from that era that no current app can open natively. The converter rescues this data in full: dates, payees, categories and memos. It moves that data moves it into modern software like Quicken, GnuCash or Excel.

Tax Preparation

Tax Preparation

Export your QIF transactions to a categorised Excel spreadsheet before sending to your accountant. The category column shows exactly which expenses are deductible and the split transaction view shows the breakdown of mixed-purpose purchases at a receipt level.

Budget App Migration

Switching Budget Apps

Moving from Quicken to YNAB, Moneydance or GnuCash means moving years of transaction history. The converter exports to CSV or OFX so your new app gets the full picture: every transaction, every category, every memo, without starting from scratch.

Small Business Bookkeeping

 FAQs

Common QIF Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from Quicken users, bookkeepers and personal finance migrators.

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a plain-text file format for financial transactions. Apps that export QIF include Quicken (all versions), GnuCash, Microsoft Money, Moneydance, KMyMoney and many bank download portals. Files use the .qif extension and contain a series of single-letter field codes, one per line, with each transaction ending in a caret (^) character.

Yes. Microsoft Money was discontinued in 2009 but millions of QIF archives still exist. Univik QIF Converter reads Money exports from all versions (Money 2007, 2008, 2009 and earlier), correctly handling the Windows-1252 encoding and MM/DD/YY date format that Money used. Your historical transactions, categories and memos export cleanly to Excel or OFX.

Split transactions use the S (split category), $ (split amount) and E (split memo) field codes in QIF. The converter reads every split line and creates one row per split in Excel and CSV output. Each row carries the parent transaction date and payee, so every row is independently useful in a pivot table. The total amount of all split rows equals the parent transaction T value.

Yes. QIF date formats vary by bank and region. Common formats include MM/DD/YY (US Quicken), DD/MM/YYYY (European banks) and MM-DD-YYYY. The converter auto-detects the most likely format from the first few transactions and shows you a confirmation before export. You can override the detection if needed. The output always uses ISO date format (YYYY-MM-DD) in Excel and CSV for unambiguous sorting.

QIF is a simple plain-text format with limited structure, no unique transaction IDs and no formal spec beyond Intuit's original documentation. OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is an XML-based standard with unique transaction IDs, formal balance reporting and broader support from accounting software. Most modern apps prefer OFX over QIF for imports. Univik QIF Converter can export to OFX so your QIF data moves into QuickBooks, Sage and Banktivity without compatibility issues.
