Quick Answer

Go to account.microsoft.com/privacy → Privacy → Copilot → Export all activity history to download your conversations as CSV. For individual responses, hover over any Copilot response and click the Export button to save as Word, PDF, or text.

Note: Microsoft Copilot's export options have changed over time. Some features like full conversation export to Word/PDF may no longer be available. This guide covers all current methods.
1

Choose Your Export Method

Multiple options for different needs

Microsoft Copilot offers several ways to export your data depending on your account type and needs:

📄 Individual Response Export
Export single responses directly from Copilot interface. Save as Word document, PDF, or plain text file.
🔗 Share Link Method
Generate shareable links for conversations that can be accessed later or shared with others.
🏢 Enterprise Export (M365 Copilot)
For Microsoft 365 Copilot users, access data via My Account portal or admin tools like Microsoft Purview eDiscovery.
2

Export via Privacy Dashboard

Download all your Copilot activity history

The Microsoft Privacy Dashboard is the official way to export your complete Copilot activity history.

Step 1: Go to account.microsoft.com/privacy and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Copilot app activity history
Your prompts and Copilot responses from copilot.microsoft.com and Copilot apps.
Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps
Activity from Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other M365 apps.

Step 2: Navigate to Privacy → Empower your productivity → Copilot.

Step 3: Click "Export all activity history". A CSV file will download to your device.

There are two separate sections: Copilot app activity (for copilot.microsoft.com) and Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps (for Word, Excel, etc.). Export from both if you use both.

Export Individual Responses

Save specific responses one at a time

You can export individual Copilot responses directly from the chat interface:

How do I export my Copilot chats?

You can export your Copilot conversations using several methods:

1. Privacy Dashboard for full history
2. Export button for individual responses
3. Copy and paste to save manually

Export options when you click the Export button:

  • Word document (.docx) - Editable document with formatting
  • PDF file (.pdf) - Fixed format for sharing
  • Text file (.txt) - Plain text without formatting
Export options may vary depending on your Copilot version and Microsoft's current interface. Some users report that Word/PDF export has been removed in recent updates.
4

Export via Copilot Settings

Access export from within Copilot

You can also access export options directly within the Copilot app or website:

  1. Open copilot.microsoft.com
  2. Click your profile icon (or "Account")
  3. Select Privacy → Export or delete history
  4. Choose to export or manage your data

This method redirects you to the Privacy Dashboard but provides a more direct path from within Copilot.

Legacy Copilot data: If you have chats from before October 2024 (when Copilot was still called Bing Chat), go to Privacy Dashboard → Browsing and search → Clear all Copilot activity history to manage that older data.
5

Enterprise & Microsoft 365 Copilot

Export for work or school accounts

If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot with a work or school account (Entra ID), export options differ:

👤 User Export (My Account Portal)
Users can delete their Copilot activity history via the My Account portal. Export may be available depending on organization settings.
👨‍💼 Admin Export (Microsoft Purview)
Administrators can use Microsoft Purview eDiscovery to search, review, and export Copilot prompts and responses for compliance purposes.
🔌 API Export (Teams Export API)
The Copilot Activity Export API allows programmatic export of Copilot interactions across Microsoft 365 apps including Teams, Word, and Outlook.
Enterprise restrictions: Your organization's admin policies may restrict export capabilities. Contact your IT administrator for specific guidance on your organization's Copilot data policies.

What's Inside Your Export

The Privacy Dashboard exports your Copilot activity as a CSV file. Here's what it contains:

CSV Export Structure
// Column headers in exported CSV:

The CSV export may show truncated responses. For complete conversation content, use individual response export or copy/paste method.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happened to the Word/PDF export feature?
Microsoft has changed Copilot's export options over time. The direct export to Word/PDF may have been modified or removed in recent updates. Currently, the recommended method is using the Privacy Dashboard for bulk export (CSV) or copying/pasting individual responses. Check for the export button below responses - if available, it will show format options.
Can I export entire conversations at once?
Currently, there's no one-click option to export complete formatted conversations. The Privacy Dashboard exports activity history as CSV (which may truncate content). For full conversations, you can use Ctrl+P → Save as PDF to print the current view, or export/copy individual responses.
What's the difference between consumer and enterprise Copilot export?
Consumer Copilot (personal Microsoft account) uses the Privacy Dashboard at account.microsoft.com/privacy. Enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot (work/school account) uses the My Account portal and admin tools like Microsoft Purview eDiscovery. Enterprise data handling is governed by organizational policies.
Is my Copilot chat history synced across devices?
Yes. When you sign in to Copilot with your Microsoft account, your chat history syncs across all devices - web, Windows app, mobile app, and Edge sidebar. You can access the same conversations anywhere you're signed in.
How long does Microsoft keep my Copilot data?
For consumer accounts, chat history is stored for up to 18 months by default. You can delete your history at any time via Privacy Dashboard or Copilot settings. Enterprise retention depends on organizational policies set by administrators.
Can I export Copilot images I generated?
Images shared in chat or generated by Copilot may be retained for up to 30 days. You can download generated images directly from the chat by right-clicking and saving. Vision screenshots are not stored after the session ends.
What about Copilot in Edge sidebar?
Copilot in the Edge browser sidebar uses the same activity history as copilot.microsoft.com when you're signed in. Export via the same Privacy Dashboard method. If you use Copilot without signing in, that data is not saved.
Why is my CSV export showing jumbled text?
CSV files need to be opened in a spreadsheet application like Excel or Google Sheets to display properly. If opened in a text editor, the data appears jumbled. The CSV may also truncate long responses - use individual export for complete content.
Can I import my Copilot data somewhere else?
The CSV export can be imported into spreadsheets, databases, or other tools that accept CSV format. However, Microsoft does not provide a way to restore or import conversations back into Copilot. The export is for backup and reference purposes.
Are there browser extensions for Copilot export?
Yes. Extensions like AI Exporter and Save my Chatbot support exporting Copilot conversations to PDF, Markdown, and other formats. These provide more formatting options than the official export but are third-party tools.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
1 Export button not visible

Hover directly over the Copilot response to reveal action buttons. If still not visible, Microsoft may have changed the interface. Use Privacy Dashboard export or copy/paste as alternatives. Try using Edge browser which may have more consistent UI.

2 CSV file looks corrupted or unreadable

Open the CSV file in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet application - not a text editor. If encoding issues appear, try importing with UTF-8 encoding. The data is structured but requires proper CSV parsing to display correctly.

3 Can't find Copilot in Privacy Dashboard

Navigate to Privacy → Empower your productivity → Copilot. If using a work account, you may need to use the My Account portal instead. Ensure you're signed in with the same Microsoft account you use for Copilot.

4 Chat history disappeared

Check if you're signed in to Copilot with your Microsoft account. Chat history is only saved when signed in. In Edge, click the sidebar icon at copilot.microsoft.com to see full history. History may also be cleared after 18 months or if you deleted it previously.

5 Copy/paste loses formatting

When copying from Copilot, formatting often doesn't transfer well. Use "Paste Special → Keep Text Only" for clean text, or use browser print-to-PDF (Ctrl+P → Save as PDF) to preserve the visual layout. OneNote Web Clipper can also capture formatted pages.
