Reading mailbox…

An Entourage mail viewer for archives from the Office 2004 and 2008 era

Microsoft Entourage was the Mac mail client in Office X, 2004 and 2008, Entourage X through Entourage 2008, before Outlook 2011 replaced it. Many of those installs sat on Exchange accounts in offices. Its exports are plain mbox files. This page reads them right in your browser, without Entourage, without a Mac and without sending a byte to a server.

Reads the dragged out folders

Drag a folder out of Entourage and you get Inbox.mbox or Projects.mbox on the Desktop. The tool opens those files exactly as they were written.

Opens an .rge archive

An Entourage archive is a package with a Mail folder inside. Point Select a folder at it and every mailbox in On My Computer loads, folder names kept.

Works on Windows too

Entourage never ran on Windows, but its exports do. Copy them to a PC and read them here in Edge or Chrome, no Mac required.

Rescue into a living client

Save any message as .eml and it opens in Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird with its attachments. Pull a single attachment out on its own.

Open an Entourage export on any device

Short answer: the .mbox files are ordinary text, so copy them off the old Mac to anything with a browser and load this page on it. Office of any version is not needed on that machine.

MACEntourage export on a Mac

Today's macOS will not run Entourage, but Safari or Chrome opens its exports here. Handy for an old PowerPC era archive that came over with a migration.

WINDOWSEntourage export on Windows

Carry the .mbox files over on a USB stick and read them here in whichever browser Windows has. An .rge archive shows as a plain folder. Open it and pick the Mail folder, or drop the files one at a time.

LINUXEntourage export on Linux

The exports open in Firefox or Chromium like any other mbox. No mail client needs to be installed or configured.

PHONEEntourage export on a phone

Send a .mbox to the phone and read it here in Safari or Chrome. A single folder from the old Mac fits a phone fine.

CHROMEBOOKEntourage export on ChromeOS

Copy the files to Drive or a thumb drive and choose them here in Chrome. Nothing else on a Chromebook understands them.

What the Univik viewer reads in an Entourage export

Entourage kept mail in a database of its own, and only the exports are mbox. The tool reads those exports and knows the shapes they come in.

FolderName.mbox drags

Each drag to the Desktop writes one file holding that folder's messages, subfolders not included. The tool lists every message inside with sender, date and subject.

The .rge package

File, then Export, writes an Entourage archive that Finder shows as one item. Inside it, Mail, then On My Computer, holds a folder per mailbox with an .mbox in each. The folder picker walks the whole tree.

Script exports with hierarchy

The Office MVP scripts such as Make_MBOX dumped every folder to an Entourage Archives folder on the Desktop, nesting kept. Pick that folder here and each mailbox loads, with the top bar selector to move between them.

Old Mac line endings

Exports from the classic Mac side of Entourage 2001 can carry CR line endings. The tool converts them, so those files open as separate messages instead of one block.

Attachments and HTML

Attachments that were inside the message open from the Attachments tab. Rich HTML messages keep their embedded pictures while remote ones stay blocked.

Full headers

Message-ID, Received and Date appear untouched in the Headers tab, still enough to trace a thread from twenty years ago.

How to view an Entourage mail export online

Get the mail out of Entourage

On the old Mac, drag a mail folder from the Entourage folder list to the Desktop. A file named after the folder with .mbox on the end appears. Repeat for each folder, or export an .rge archive from the File menu.

Bring the files here

Drop a .mbox onto the box at the top. For an .rge archive, use Select a folder on the package and every mailbox inside it loads.

Read and rescue

Open a message, check the Headers or Attachments tab and save what matters as .eml so it opens in any mail program you use now.

Where Entourage kept your mail

Everything lived inside an Identity, and the Identity lived in your Documents folder.

The Identity and its Database

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/Database, or the Office 2004 or Office X Identities folder for earlier versions. The Database file holds mail, contacts, calendar and notes together and is not mbox. It needs Entourage, or an export, to be read.

Drag to the Desktop

The quickest export. Drag any mail folder out of the folder list and Entourage writes FolderName.mbox. Subfolders have to be dragged separately, and the Finder limits a single drag to 199 items.

The .rge archive

File, then Export, in Entourage 2004 and 2008 writes an .rge package holding mail, contacts, calendar, notes and tasks. Right click it and choose Show Package Contents, then Mail, then On My Computer, to reach the .mbox files.

When the Database was damaged

A corrupt Database made drags crash, and the usual fix was to split big folders such as Inbox and Sent by year and export the pieces. If your exports are named Inbox 2009.mbox and Inbox 2010.mbox, that is why.

Outlook 2011 did the same trick

Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 let Outlook drag a folder to the Desktop as .mbox too, subfolders included. Later Outlook for Mac moved to .olm archives, which are a different format. The 2011 drags open here.

Questions people ask about viewing Entourage mail online

Can I open an Entourage .mbox export on a Windows PC?

Yes. The export is standard mbox text, so it does not care that it was made on a Mac. Copy the file to the PC, bring up this page and drop it in. No conversion and no Outlook involved.

Can this viewer open the Entourage Database file directly?

No. The Database inside Main Identity is Entourage's own format and mixes mail with contacts and calendar. It has to be opened in Entourage and exported, by dragging folders out or writing an .rge archive. Those exports are what this page reads.

How do I get the .mbox files out of an .rge archive?

On a Mac, right click the .rge file and choose Show Package Contents, then open Mail and On My Computer. On Windows the archive already shows as a folder. Use Select a folder on the archive itself and the tool finds every .mbox inside, or pick the files one by one.

Why does an Entourage export only contain one folder?

Because a drag to the Desktop exports that folder alone, without its subfolders. Each subfolder had to be dragged out separately. If you inherited a pile of .mbox files with folder names, that is the pattern. Put them in one folder and load them together here.

Is an Entourage export the same as an Apple Mail .mbox?

Close, and both open here. Entourage writes a single file called FolderName.mbox. Apple Mail writes a package folder ending in .mbox with the mailbox inside. Apple Mail can import the Entourage kind through Files in mbox format, and this page reads both without importing anything.

Is my Entourage export uploaded anywhere?

No. The browser reads the file from your disk and nothing goes out. There is no server and no account. Go offline once the page has loaded and it still works, which is easy to check for yourself.

Can I open old Outlook 2011 for Mac drags here too?

Yes. Outlook for Mac 2011 kept the drag to Desktop export and wrote .mbox the same way, subfolders included. Later Outlook versions switched to .olm archives, which are not mbox and need a different tool.

How do I move Entourage mail into a mail program I use today?

Apple Mail and Thunderbird import the .mbox directly. Outlook does not, so load the export on this page, choose the messages worth keeping and save each one as .eml. Those files carry headers and attachments and any current client opens them.
