Univik BUSY Data Recovery Toolkit for Windows

BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer Examine company data read-only, with the audit trail and deleted vouchers

Univik BUSY Data Recovery Toolkit includes a BUSY data forensic analyzer for Windows. It reads .bds company folders from BUSY Accounting Software as a reader, with BUSY absent from the PC. Auditors and investigators see who changed or deleted a voucher and look for deleted vouchers inside the file.

Read-OnlyAudit TrailDeleted VouchersRuns Offline

*Reading costs nothing. In the free build a save stops at 10 items per section. Paying lifts that limit, and a 30-day money-back guarantee applies. The Forensics licence covers 50 PCs.

  • Edit Log: Each add, change and delete shows the user, the computer, the time and the reason.
  • Deleted Vouchers: Records still sitting in unused space of the file are listed.
  • No Writes: The company folder is opened read-only and nothing goes online.

 Key Features

What Univik BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer Does Six examination jobs on a company folder you must not change

Audit Trail With User, Computer and Reason

Every entry in the edit log lists the action, the voucher number, the amount, the user, the computer and the reason typed. Double-click a row to see the saved copy of the voucher when the detailed audit trail was on.

Login and Activity Log

A second view lists logins and activity with the time, the user, the computer, the category and the BUSY version. Deleted masters, such as an account removed from the books, are named in their own list.

Deleted Vouchers Found in Unused Space

BUSY clears most deleted records. The analyzer lists the ones that remain readable, and it marks a record as partial when only the number and the date survived.

Missing Voucher Numbers Counted

The software counts the numbers missing from a series. For each gap it says whether the voucher was found in unused space or only the account and the date can still be seen in the daily totals.

Read-Only From the First Click

Evidence opens without any write. Nothing is repaired or rewritten. No copy of the books leaves the PC.

Hash Values and Saved Findings

The toolkit records hash values for the source files. A licence adds saving in Excel, CSV, JSON or PDF, with deleted rows in amber.

 The Core Problem

Why Not Examine BUSY Data in BUSY Itself?

Because the vendor's program exists to record transactions, and holding evidence still is not its job. Two problems show up on day one of a review.

Trap 1: A Restore Can Replace the Company

Getting a backup into the vendor's program means a restore. Its help says Yes replaces an existing company and No creates a new one, per the old data after update FAQ. One wrong click on a seized copy is a loss.

Trap 2: The Audit Trail Starts Late

The vendor says recording starts from the time the option is enabled. Changes made before that are not added later, so a quiet company may hold no edit log at all.

The Way Out: Read a Copy Straight From Disk

Univik BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer reads the .bds files on their own and never writes to them. Our advice: copy the folder first, keep the original sealed and examine the copy. What the file holds is then what you report, and nothing more is claimed.

 The Audit Trail

What Does the BUSY Audit Trail Record? Three actions and the details kept with each one

Add

A New Voucher

The entry is logged with the user, the computer, the time and the amount.

Modify

A Changed Voucher

A later entry for the same voucher. The reason typed by the user is kept with it.

Delete

A Removed Voucher

The voucher leaves the books but its delete entry stays in the log.

Saved copy

Detailed Audit Trail

With this setting on, BUSY also keeps a full copy of the voucher. The analyzer shows it on a double-click.

Check this first

The edit log has entries only after the Audit Trail option is turned on and the company is closed so the changes are saved. The vendor's page lists the switch under Settings > Features/Options > General and the report under Reports > Checklist > Audit Trail Report. See the vendor's audit trail page.

Financial years starting on 1 April 2023 fall under the Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014, where Rule 3(1) wants books on software with an audit trail that stays on. A file from an older year or from a firm outside that rule may hold no log. Our guide to finding edited and deleted vouchers walks through the vendor's own screens.

 Three Steps

How to Run a BUSY Forensic Examination

Copy the folder, read the copy and keep the findings in a file a second examiner can open.

1

Copy the Company Folder

Copy the evidence folder, such as COMP0001, to a local drive on the lab PC. Work on the copy and keep the original untouched.

2

Open It Read-Only

Open the copy in the analyzer. Review the audit trail, the activity log, the deleted vouchers and the status flags with date and voucher type filters.

3

Save the Findings

Choose Excel, CSV, JSON or PDF (a licence is needed). Deleted rows show in amber and the audit trail gets its own sheet.

 Who It Is For

Who Needs a BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer?

Statutory Auditors

The auditor reports on the audit trail under Rule 11(g). File an extract of the year's edit log with the working papers.

Forensic Accountants and Investigators

A case needs to know who edited or deleted a bill. Read the entries from a copy and note the hash values before anyone else opens the books.

Owners and Finance Heads

A partner left and the numbers look odd. Check the log and the missing voucher numbers on a copy, with no one touching the live company.

 Review Notes

What Red Flags Can a BUSY Data Review Find? Starting points, not proof

A flag is a question and not a finding. Our view: write down each one, then ask the person who made the entry.

Red flagWhat it can meanWhere the analyzer shows it
Amount edited after postingA figure changed once the bill was settled or the period was closed.Audit trail amount and the Amount edited flag
Gaps in a voucher seriesA voucher was deleted or the series was cut.Missing voucher numbers and Deleted vouchers
Renumbered vouchersOrder changed to hide a gap or move an entry. The Renumbered flag
Entries from an unknown computerSomeone posted from a machine that is not the usual one.Computer column in the audit trail and the activity log
Deleted mastersAn account or item was removed after it had been used.Deleted masters list
Reasons left blankEdits were saved with no explanation.Reason column in the audit trail

The vendor's own checks for missing vouchers include other companies, filters, user rights and the incomplete voucher list, as its data lost page sets out. Rule those out before you call a gap suspicious.

 Side by Side

BUSY Screens or a BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer? How the vendor's own screens, Excel and the analyzer compare for evidence work

Keep the vendor's program for entry and for its side-by-side voucher comparison. Use Univik BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer when the examination must happen on a copy, off the live system.

What you need Audit Trail Report in BUSY Alt+E Export to Excel Univik BUSY Data Forensic AnalyzerTRIAL
Needs the vendor's program Yes Yes No
Works on a copy off the live system Only after a restore Only after a restore Yes, straight from the folder

Per the vendor, its detailed report can show the original and the modified voucher side by side. That is a strength of the program itself. Univik BUSY Data Viewer is the free reader for when you only need to look, and the BUSY Data Converter handles full-year exports.

 Questions

BUSY Forensic Analysis Questions

Make a copy of the company folder on a local drive, then open that copy in Univik BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer. The software acts as a reader of the .bds files and writes nothing back. The original folder and the copy stay as they were.

Yes, in part. BUSY clears most deleted records, so a readable copy remains only when the voucher was saved again before it was deleted. The analyzer lists the ones it finds in unused space of the file. A record marked partial shows only basic details such as the number and the date.

No. The vendor says recording starts from the time the Audit Trail option is turned on and earlier changes are not added later. A company created with a GSTIN or CIN may have it on by default. A file without entries has no edit log to examine.

The vendor's page says it logs additions, modifications and deletions with the user, the time and the type of action. The analyzer lists each voucher entry with the user, the computer, the amount and the reason typed. With the detailed audit trail on, a double-click shows the saved copy of the voucher.

The vendor says the detailed audit trail cannot be disabled once it is enabled. The Companies (Accounts) Rules, 2014 say in Rule 3(1) that books must sit on software whose audit trail stays on. That applies from financial years starting on 1 April 2023.

It gives an auditor a read-only view of the audit records inside the company file. Rule 11(g) asks the auditor to report on whether the audit trail operated through the year. The opinion stays with the auditor, and the analyzer supplies the entries to look at.

Yes. Univik BUSY Data Forensic Analyzer records hash values for the source files, so you can show later that the evidence did not change. The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 puts a certificate in the Schedule to its Section 63. That form has a field for the file's hash value.

Univik tested the toolkit on BUSY 21 data, 3 companies holding 6,411 vouchers that all balanced. Both .bds company folders and older .mdb files open. Send a folder from any other release to the Univik support team if it will not open.

Yes. The installer is digitally signed and the software works offline. Nothing from the company folder is sent anywhere, so a client's books or a seized copy stay on the lab PC.

No. The analyzer examines data and does not repair it. A damaged folder needs Univik BUSY Data Recovery Software, which rebuilds what the surviving pages allow and labels each item. Heavy damage can still leave gaps, and no recovery is guaranteed.

No. The toolkit targets Windows only. A Mac user can run a Windows virtual machine or carry the copied folder to a Windows PC. Supported versions are Windows 11 and 10.

Reading is free. A trial save stops at 10 items per section. Licences start at $99 for 2 PCs. The Business tier costs $199 for 10 PCs and the Forensics tier $299 for 50 PCs, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

No. Univik has no tie to BUSY. The analyzer reads company files by itself and never calls the vendor's program.
