 Know Your Store

A Sealed Store Changes the Playbook

Kerio keeps mail as loose files. MDaemon does too. Axigen does not: its storage is a proprietary container that only Axigen itself reads fluently.

The exit runs through protocols

With no per-message files to copy, extraction happens over IMAP and CalDAV while Axigen serves the data itself. The server is the door and the door needs to be open.

Keep the server alive until the end

The most expensive Axigen mistake is switching the box off before extraction finishes. A powered-down sealed store is a recovery project, not a migration. Decommissioning is the last step of the plan, never the first.

The backup service is the safety net

Axigen's built-in backup and restore covers domain configuration, accounts and messages. We snapshot it before the first pass, so the project always has a fallback that predates our involvement.

 Why Teams Leave

The Outlook Connector Is Gone. Users Noticed.

Since Axigen X4 there is no Outlook Connector. Axigen's own guidance: run Outlook over IMAP and add a third-party CalDavSynchronizer add-in for calendars.

What that setup costs daily

IMAP Outlook means no native calendar or contact sync. The add-in fills the gap but it is community software carrying business scheduling. Every Outlook update is a small gamble.

What migration gives back

Microsoft 365 returns native Outlook: calendars, contacts, free-busy lookups and mobile sync as built-ins rather than add-ins. For Google shops, Workspace does the same in the browser. The workaround era simply ends.

How we handle the calendars

CalDAV calendars get their own conversion pass so recurring meetings, attendees and reminders arrive as real calendar objects. Whatever the add-in was syncing is reconciled before cutover, not discovered after.

 Vendor Tooling, Read Correctly

Auto Migration Is Clever. It Also Points Inward

Axigen's Auto Migration is genuinely elegant engineering. Understanding what it does explains what it cannot do for your exit.

MechanismWhat it actually does
First-login pullWhen a user signs in and the account is missing, Axigen logs into the legacy server with the same credentials and pulls the mailbox over IMAP. Migration into Axigen, one login at a time.
MIGRATE CLIThe command-line twin of the same operation for admins who want batches instead of waiting for logins. Direction unchanged: toward Axigen.
SMTP relay to legacyMail for not-yet-migrated accounts is relayed to the old server so nothing queues twice. Thoughtful design, still built entirely around arriving.
The outbound storyNothing shipped with Axigen exports a fleet to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Leaving means IMAP and CalDAV extraction with delta passes, which is precisely the service on this page.

 Check First

Axigen Exits You Can Run Without a Service

Not every departure needs project management. These three do not.

Single-digit mailbox counts

A small office on plain mail can add accounts at the destination and pull history over IMAP with any decent client or desktop tool. Done by Friday.

Webmail credentials in hand

Desktop Axigen migrators log into each mailbox and save it to PST or other formats. When users are few and passwords are known, a license beats a project fee.

Axigen is working for you

The product is alive, runs on Windows and Linux with a free tier available. If the sealed store and the Outlook situation do not bother your team, staying put costs nothing.

The service earns its quote when calendars matter, when domains multiply, when nobody holds every password or when the mailbox count makes one-at-a-time unthinkable.

 Destination Map

Every Axigen Feature, Rehomed

The plan names a destination for each Axigen feature in writing before cutover. These are the defaults we start from.

Domains and accounts

The account inventory comes from Axigen's backup service export, so provisioning at the destination starts from the server's own truth rather than a spreadsheet from memory.

CalDAV calendars

Converted to native Microsoft 365 or Google calendars with recurrences and attendees intact. This is the single biggest daily-life upgrade of the whole move.

Contacts and collaboration data

Personal organizer contacts and shared address data land in destination contact stores, deduplicated where the same person exists twice.

Aliases and secondary domains

Read from the domain configuration and recreated before any MX change. Old addresses keep receiving without a gap.

Mailing lists and groups

Axigen lists become distribution groups with membership preserved, so announcements reach the same people from the same address.

WebMail filters and signatures

Server-side rules do not import into any destination. Each user receives their filter and signature list as a rebuild checklist with the setup sheet.

Your Concerns

Addressing Your Migration Concerns

Common questions and concerns about migrating from Axigen.

"Will there be downtime?"

Measured in minutes. Extraction happens beside a live Axigen and the switchover delta is over before the coffee cools. Monday looks normal, just on a new platform.

"Will I lose any data?"

100% Data Integrity. We migrate all emails, contacts, calendars, tasks and public folders. Folder structure preserved. We verify data counts before and after migration.

"How much does it cost?"

$15 a seat and downhill from there. Free assessment first, fixed quote second, invoice only after verification passes.

"How long will it take?"

Depends on Size. 1-50 mailboxes: 1-3 days. 50-200 mailboxes: 3-7 days. 200+ mailboxes: 1-2 weeks. We can work nights/weekends to minimize disruption.

"What about multiple domains?"

Full Multi-Domain Support. Axigen's multi-domain architecture is fully supported. We migrate all domains and can route them to same or different destinations.

"Is our data secure?"

Locked in transit. TLS everywhere, NDA on request and working copies destroyed at sign-off.

How It Works

Our Migration Process

A proven 6-step process that makes sure of successful Axigen migration with minimal disruption.

Assessment

Edition, platform, domain list, seat count and calendar habits all go into the survey. The plan and the fixed quote come out of it, free of charge.

Planning

Dates land on the calendar, the destination tenant gets built and multi-domain estates get an explicit cutover order agreed in writing.

Pre-Migration

The sealed store is read out over IMAP and CalDAV against the running server. Staff keep working; the extraction is invisible from a desk.

Verification

Mailbox totals, folder totals and sampled messages are matched source to target. Discrepancies get closed before any switch date exists.

Delta Sync

The last delta collects mid-project arrivals, then the MX record hands delivery to the new platform for good.

Cutover & Support

The MX record moves, users get their setup sheets and the first weeks run under our watch until the last question is answered.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Axigen email migration.

We migrate from all Axigen Mail Server versions including Axigen 10.x (latest), 9.x, 8.x and older legacy versions. We support all editions - Business, ISP/Hosting and Enterprise - on Linux, Windows, FreeBSD and any platform Axigen runs on.

We migrate Axigen to Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online), Google Workspace (Gmail), Exchange Server (on-premises 2013-2019), Zimbra, Zoho Mail and other IMAP-compatible platforms. We also support Axigen-to-Axigen migrations for upgrades, platform changes or server consolidation, plus export to PST/MBOX/EML files.

A full inventory: messages and attachments, folder trees, contacts, CalDAV calendars with their recurrences, tasks, notes and the mailing lists. Timestamps, flags and read status ride along. If the account had it, the plan lists it.

Plan around the count. Below 50 mailboxes the work fits in 3 days. Between 50 and 200 budget a working week. Beyond that we phase it. The switchover delta needs minutes and can run whenever your office is empty.

Practically zero. Axigen keeps serving mail throughout the bulk extraction. The cutover is a short delta plus the MX change, booked for an evening or weekend. Users log into the new platform the next morning and find everything waiting.

$15 per mailbox opens the scale. It becomes $12 above 25 seats, $10 above 100 and negotiated above 500. Included: the extraction, every delta pass, the verification report and support after go-live. The assessment carries no charge and no commitment.

Yes, absolutely. Axigen's multi-domain architecture is fully supported. We can migrate all domains to the same destination tenant, different tenants or mix of destinations. Domain aliases and catch-all addresses are handled during the cutover process. ISP/Hosting editions with many domains are no problem.

Typically yes - we need admin-level access to efficiently migrate all mailboxes. Options include: Axigen WebAdmin access, IMAP access with domain admin credentials or SSH/RDP access to the server. For ISP/Hosting accounts, we can work with domain-level admin credentials.

Yes. We migrate Axigen public folders including shared email folders, shared contacts and shared calendars. For Microsoft 365 destinations, these become Shared Mailboxes or Microsoft 365 Groups. Permissions may need to be reconfigured on the destination platform.

Absolutely. We regularly migrate from Axigen on Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, RHEL, etc.) to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. The source platform makes no difference to the migration process - we connect via IMAP or API and extract all data.

One-time setup, yes. Every client from Outlook to phones gets the new account details after cutover and we distribute per-platform setup sheets. Former IMAP-plus-add-in Outlook users come out ahead: their calendars finally sync without the add-in.

WebMail users will transition to the destination platform's webmail: Outlook Web Access for Microsoft 365, Gmail for Google Workspace or equivalent. We provide user guides and can conduct brief training sessions. Modern webmail interfaces are typically user-friendly and intuitive.

Yes, that is one of our specialties. ISP/Hosting Axigen installations with many domains and reseller structures are fully supported. We can migrate all domains to a single destination or route each domain to different destinations as needed. We work with domain-level admins when necessary.

It is protected three ways: TLS on every transfer, an NDA signed on request before work begins and deletion of our working copies after your sign-off. The process reads structure and counts. Humans never open your messages.

Do not rush it off. The sealed store means the running server is your only easy window into the data, so Axigen stays up as a reference until every count is confirmed. Then retire it whenever suits you. Nothing on it was altered by our work.

An Axigen migration service extracts complete mailboxes from an Axigen Mail Server, whose storage is a sealed proprietary format, then delivers them into Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Exchange or another platform. The work runs over IMAP and CalDAV against the live server, covers mail, contacts, calendars, tasks and mailing lists, applies delta passes for late-arriving mail and closes with per-mailbox verification counts. Engineers handle planning, extraction and proof, which is what separates it from a do-it-yourself tool run.

Small and simple says tool. A few mailboxes with known passwords export fine through a desktop migrator against webmail credentials. The service takes over when the CalDAV calendars carry real scheduling, when domains and aliases multiply, when passwords are scattered or when the server must stay live and verified through hundreds of accounts. The free assessment sorts you into the cheaper correct category, whichever it is.
