A My Data backup is its own file, dropped in whatever spot you picked back then. Move either the data folder or that backup off an old disk onto any Windows machine and the converter picks it up there. The old PC can stay switched off, and AOL never asks you to log in.

For Inbox mail that was never saved, only the cached headers and a short snippet sit on the PC, so those come out as a preview with a note rather than a whole message. Anything left only on the AOL server is not on disk to convert.
