Capabilities

Powerful OST to EML Features

Everything you need to convert OST emails to EML accurately, in bulk and without data loss.

Convert OST to EML

Export every message in an OST as a standalone EML file. The output is a clean, one-message-per-file set that opens in nearly any email client.

Convert OST to EML Without Outlook

No Outlook installation, Exchange server or original profile is needed. The converter reads the OST directly, which is what makes orphaned and inaccessible files work.

Batch OST to EML Conversion

Add a whole folder of OST files and export them to EML in one run. Built for help desks and admins handling many mailboxes at once.

Mirrors Your Folder Structure

Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, Deleted Items and every custom folder are recreated as a directory tree, so the EML files land in the same layout as the mailbox.

RFC 5322 Compliant Output

Each EML is a faithful internet message, not a flattened copy. Headers, MIME parts and encodings follow the standard so the files validate and import cleanly.

Attachments and Metadata Intact

Every attachment, inline image and header field such as From, To, Cc, Subject and Date is preserved, with read and unread status carried over.

Selective Folders and Date Filter

Convert only what you need. Pick specific folders and set a date range so large mailboxes export just the relevant messages.

Exchange, Office 365 and IMAP OST

Converts cached OST files from Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365 and IMAP accounts, including very large mailboxes, to EML.

Custom EML File Naming

Choose how output files are named, for example by subject, date or sender, so the EML set is easy to sort and search in Windows Explorer.

Nothing Lost

Everything is Preserved

OST to EML conversion keeps your mailbox exactly as it was, with nothing dropped or changed.

All emails as individual EML
Attachments and inline images
Folder hierarchy as a directory tree
HTML and plain-text body
Read and unread status
Header fields and metadata
Message-ID and threading headers
Unicode and non-English text

Tricky Files

Difficult OST Files, Handled

The files that defeat manual methods are exactly the ones this converter is built for.

Orphaned OST

Files left behind after an account or profile was removed are read and exported in full.

Corrupt or inaccessible OST

Damaged files that Outlook cannot open are read and the mail that can be saved is written to EML.

Oversized OST

Mailboxes from 10 GB to 50 GB and beyond are handled without splitting or stalling.

Encrypted OST

Cached files that use Outlook's standard account-level encryption are read directly, with no separate key to supply.

IMAP, Exchange and 365

Cached OST from every common account type is supported, including modern Microsoft 365 caches.

Legacy ANSI OST

Old ANSI format OST files from earlier Outlook versions are read alongside Unicode ones.

Your Data Stays Safe

Forensic-Grade Integrity

Univik has built forensic and recovery tools since 2013, and that discipline shows in how this converter treats your data.

The source OST is opened read only and is never changed, so the original stays intact. Message bodies are copied without being changed, so the content is exactly as it was, not reformatted. For investigations and legal hold, one EML per message keeps the result easy to review and check.

Source OST opened strictly read only and never modified
Message bodies copied as they are, never changed or reformatted
Folder names and timestamps preserved for an accurate record
Per-message output suited to legal hold and e-discovery review

Simple Process

How to Convert OST to EML in 4 Steps

Anyone can do it. With a few clicks on Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7 you turn an OST file into EML, with no Outlook needed.

1

Download and Install

Download Univik OST to EML Converter and install it on any Windows PC. No Outlook or Exchange profile is required.

2

Add OST Files

Click Add File or Add Folder to load one or many OST files. Drag and drop is supported and orphaned OST files are accepted.

3

Preview and Choose EML

Preview the mailbox folders and messages, apply optional date or folder filters, then select EML as the output and a destination folder.

4

Convert to EML

Click Convert. Each message is written as an individual EML file in a folder tree that matches your original Outlook folders.

No Outlook Required

Univik Converter vs Manual Methods

Outlook has no built-in OST to EML export, so manual routes are slow and fail on the files that matter most.

Univik OST to EML Converter

  • Outlook not required: opens the OST file on its own on any Windows PC.
  • Handles orphaned OST: exports files from deleted mailboxes and closed accounts.
  • Batch mode: convert many OST files to EML in a single run.
  • Structure kept: output mirrors the original folders as a directory tree.
  • Safe for your data: the OST is only read, your original file stays as it is.

Manual Outlook Method

  • Outlook required: needs Outlook installed and the original profile.
  • Fails for orphaned OST: will not work if the mailbox or profile is gone.
  • No EML export: Outlook saves a message as MSG, not EML, so there is no one-click route.
  • Manual and slow: messages are handled one by one with no batch mode.
  • Loses structure: the folder hierarchy is not recreated for you.

Common Situations

Common Conversion Scenarios

Exchange or Microsoft 365 decommission

When a server or tenant is retired, cached OST files are all that remain. Export them to EML so the mail survives the shutdown.

Employee offboarding

Hand over a leaver's mailbox as portable EML files that the manager or successor can open without an Outlook profile.

Orphaned OST recovery

Open mail from a removed account or a copied OST that Outlook refuses to load, then save it as EML you can actually read.

Migrate to Thunderbird or Apple Mail

Both clients import EML directly, so OST to EML is the cleanest path off Outlook onto a different platform.

Legal hold and e-discovery

Produce one EML per message for review platforms, with read-only handling that keeps the source defensible.

Long-term archiving

Keep mail as standard files that do not depend on Outlook, Exchange or a live account to stay readable.

Compatibility

Where Your EML Files Open

EML is a universal, single-message format, so the output is readable almost everywhere.

Mozilla Thunderbird
Windows Live Mail
Apple Mail
eM Client
Outlook Express
Outlook (drag a single .eml)

After Conversion

How to Import Your EML Files

Once the OST is exported, the EML files drop straight into the client you are moving to.

Import EML into Thunderbird

Install the ImportExportTools NG add-on, right-click a local folder and choose Import messages or Import all messages from a directory, then point it at the converted EML folder. The folder tree imports in one pass.

Import EML into Windows Live Mail

Windows Live Mail reads EML natively. Open the EML folder in File Explorer and drag the files into a Windows Live Mail folder. They appear at once with attachments and formatting intact.

Import EML into Apple Mail

On a Mac, open Apple Mail and drag the EML files into a mailbox to import them. Apple Mail opens EML directly and stores each message in its own EMLX format.

On a Mac? The converter runs on Windows, but its EML output is built for cross-platform use. Move the EML files to your Mac and they import directly into Apple Mail, so an OST left on a Windows machine still reaches macOS without Outlook.

How It Works

How the Converter Reads Your OST

An OST is not a simple export. Understanding how it is read explains why this tool works where Outlook cannot.

An OST file is the offline replica that Outlook keeps for an Exchange, Microsoft 365 or IMAP account. On disk it is a set of B-tree indexed nodes and data blocks, and it is bound to the MAPI profile that created it. That binding is why a copied or orphaned OST will not open in another Outlook, the account it belongs to is gone.

Univik does not rely on Outlook or MAPI to read it. The engine opens the OST at the binary level, walks the node and block B-trees, resolves each folder and message object and rebuilds the mailbox tree in memory. It reads both the legacy ANSI layout and the modern Unicode layout, so very old and very large files are both supported. Nothing is written back, the source OST is read only.

Offline replica

An OST mirrors a server mailbox so Outlook can work offline, it is not a plain export.

MAPI profile bound

The file is tied to the profile that created it, which is why a copied OST will not open elsewhere.

ANSI and Unicode

Both the legacy ANSI layout and the modern Unicode layout are read, so old and very large files both work.

Read directly from the file

The engine walks the node and block B-trees itself, with no Outlook and no MAPI in the path.

Clean EML Files

RFC 5322 EML Output

Each message is exported as a real internet message with MIME, reconstructed header for header, not a flattened copy.

Standard headersFrom, To, Cc, Bcc, Subject and Date are written exactly as in the original message.
Message-IDThe original Message-ID is kept so messages stay uniquely identifiable.
Threading headersIn-Reply-To and References are preserved so conversation threads rebuild in the new client.
Original date and time zoneThe sent date is kept with its time zone rather than rewritten to the local clock.
Unicode subjectsNon-English subjects are encoded with RFC 2047 encoded words so they display correctly everywhere.
AttachmentsFiles are stored as MIME multipart parts with base64 encoding, byte for byte.
Inline imagesEmbedded images stay as CID multipart/related parts so HTML mail renders as designed.
HTML and plain textBoth body alternatives are retained so every client shows the best version it supports.

Because each EML is a faithful RFC 5322 copy, opening it in Thunderbird, Apple Mail or Outlook shows the message exactly as it appeared in the original mailbox, with threads, attachments and inline images all in place.

When to Use It

Why Export OST to EML?

Exporting OST to EML turns a locked offline cache into portable, single-message files that open almost anywhere. It is the right choice when you want to move mail into Thunderbird or Apple Mail, hand individual messages to a ticket or case, or keep a long-term archive that does not depend on Outlook.

To understand the source format first, read our guide on what an OST file is. If you would rather keep everything in one Outlook container, use the OST to PST Converter. And if you already have EML files and need to convert them to another format, the Univik EML Converter is the right tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about converting OST files to EML with Univik.

An OST to EML converter reads an Outlook OST file and saves each email as a separate EML file. Univik OST to EML Converter does this without Outlook or the original Exchange profile, so cached mailbox data becomes portable EML files that open in almost any email client.

No. The converter reads the OST file directly and writes EML files, so Outlook and the original mailbox profile are not needed. That is what lets it work on orphaned and inaccessible OST files that Outlook can no longer open.

Install the software, click Add File or Add Folder to load your OST files, preview the folders, choose EML as the output, pick a destination folder and click Convert. Each message is written as an individual EML file.

Yes. EML is a one-message-per-file format, so the converter writes one EML per email and arranges them in a folder tree that mirrors the original Outlook folders such as Inbox, Sent Items and your custom folders.

Yes. The output keeps the full folder hierarchy as a directory tree, every attachment and inline image, the HTML and plain-text body and all header fields such as From, To, Cc, Subject and Date.

Yes. Batch mode lets you add a whole folder of OST files and export them to EML in one run, with each source mailbox kept in its own output folder.

EML is a universal format. The output opens in Mozilla Thunderbird, Windows Live Mail, Apple Mail, eM Client and Outlook Express, and a single EML can be dragged straight into Outlook.

Yes. It exports OST files from Exchange, Microsoft 365 and IMAP accounts, including cached mode files, to EML with the folder structure intact.

No. The source OST is opened in read-only mode and is never modified. The tool only reads from it and writes new EML files, which keeps the original intact for backup and forensic use.

A free trial previews all OST data and exports a limited number of items per folder so you can confirm the results. The full version removes the limit for unlimited OST to EML conversion.

EML saves each message as a separate file that opens in many clients, which suits sharing single messages and migrating to Thunderbird or Apple Mail. PST packs everything into one Outlook container. To create a single PST instead, use the Univik OST to PST Converter. To convert existing EML files to another format, use the Univik EML Converter.
