Why You Cannot Open a Pegasus File Elsewhere
Pegasus Mail stores email in file types built for itself alone, which no ordinary program reads. Two hurdles keep that mail locked away.
Trap 1: A Closed Set of Formats
PMM, CNM and the other Pegasus types are made for one program. Outlook, Thunderbird and PDF readers cannot open them. The common advice is to keep Pegasus Mail running, which is no help once it is gone from the PC.
Trap 2: Mail Split Across Files
Pegasus keeps New Mail as single CNM files but saves folders as PMM stores with a separate PMI index. There is no simple built-in way to export the lot at once, and copying files by hand loses the folder layout.

Pegasus Mail has been around since the early 1990s and many offices ran it for decades. When that PC is replaced or the program stops opening on modern Windows, the mail looks lost. It is not. The PMAIL folder on disk still holds every message.
The mail is still yours. A Pegasus mailbox normally lives in the PMAIL folder, often at C:\PMAIL\MAIL\[username], where the PMM stores, their PMI indexes and the CNM new-mail files all sit.
