How Maildir details map to your converted file

Maildir keeps each message's state in the folder it sits in and in the flags at the end of its filename. Here is what each part means and where it lands after conversion.

Maildir detailWhat it meansIn Outlook / PST
new/ folderMessage not opened yetMarked unread
cur/ with S flagSeen (read)Marked read
R flagRepliedShown as replied
F flagFlaggedFlagged for follow-up
D flagDraftKept as a draft
T flagTrashed (user deleted)Placed in Deleted Items
P flagPassed (forwarded on)Kept as a normal message
Dot-folders like .INBOX.Work.2024Maildir++ subfoldersRebuilt as Work > 2024
Filename timestampDelivery timeUsed when a message has no Date header
,S=12345 in filenameMessage size (Dovecot)Part of the filename, not shown as content

Format note: PST keeps the most detail. EML and MSG keep each message with its attachments. MBOX and PDF keep the content and folder layout, but read or replied state is not part of those formats.

How To  Simple Process

How to Convert Maildir Files

Converting your emails is simple with our easy-to-use interface. No command-line expertise needed.

1
Step 1
Get Maildir Files

Copy your Maildir directories from the Linux server to your Windows machine via FTP, SCP or from a backup archive.

2
Step 2
Load Directory

Browse to the Maildir folder. The converter auto-detects the cur/new/tmp structure and displays all available email folders.

3
Step 3
Preview & Select

Preview email content to verify. Select specific folders or process all. Use filters to find specific messages.

4
Step 4
Convert

Choose your output format and click Convert. Watch progress as thousands of files are processed efficiently.

After you convert: a quick check

Two minutes of checking saves a bad migration. Compare the output against the source before you delete anything.

  • Every folder is there: Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and your custom folders.
  • Message count per folder matches the source (count the files in cur/ plus new/).
  • Unread count matches (messages that were in new/ or had no S flag).
  • Sent and Drafts landed in their own folders, not merged into the Inbox.
  • Open a few emails: attachments open, inline images show and non-English subjects read correctly.
  • The output size is close to the source, not a small fraction of it.

Advice  Honest Advice

Do You Actually Need a Converter?

A converter is not always the right tool. Pick your route based on what you have in hand.

The old server still runs

If the source mailbox is still live, free server tools move mail straight across. Dovecot's own doveadm and dsync (or imapsync) copy messages to another server or mailbox over IMAP at no cost. This is the best route when both ends are mail servers.

Free route
You want it in Thunderbird

Thunderbird reads MBOX, not Maildir. Convert the Maildir to MBOX, then import it with the ImportExportTools NG add-on. The common claim that you cannot import Maildir at all is not true. You convert it to MBOX first.

Free route
You only have the files, or you need PST or PDF

The server may be gone or you may have only a backup. If you need Outlook PST, MSG or PDF instead of another live mailbox, a file-level converter is the fit. This is where Univik Maildir Converter works. It reads the raw cur/new/tmp files on Windows, with no server and no command line.

Use Univik

Still deciding? If you can log into the mailbox, try the free route first. If all you have is a folder of files, a converter is the simpler path.

What is Maildir  Understanding Maildir

What is Maildir Format?

Maildir is the email storage format used by most Linux mail servers. Understanding its structure helps you know why specialized conversion tools are necessary.

📁 Typical Maildir Directory Structure:

Maildir/

├── cur/ ← Read messages

    ├── 1642345678.12345.hostname:2,S

    ├── 1642345712.12346.hostname:2,RS

    └── ...

├── new/ ← Unread messages

    ├── 1642345800.12350.hostname

    └── ...

├── tmp/ ← Messages being delivered

├── .Sent/ ← Sent folder (Maildir++)

    ├── cur/

    ├── new/

    └── tmp/

├── .Drafts/

└── .INBOX.Clients/ ← Nested subfolder

Key Characteristics of Maildir:
1

One File Per Email

Each email is stored as a separate file, unlike mbox which stores all emails together in one file. Because messages never share a file, Maildir needs no file locking and stays safe on shared network storage (NFS).

2

Three Subdirectories

cur (read), new (unread) and tmp (being delivered) organize message states.

3

Filename Contains Metadata

Timestamps, flags (Seen, Replied, Flagged) and unique identifiers are stored in filenames.

4

Maildir++ Extensions

Subfolders use dot-prefix names (for example .Sent, .INBOX.Clients). The Maildir++ extension was created by Sam Varshavchik, author of the Courier Mail Server, to add subfolders and mail quotas.

Where your Maildir lives on the server

Not sure where the files are? These are the default locations. Copy the folder that holds cur/ and new/ (with its dot-folders) to your Windows machine using SCP, SFTP or a backup archive.

Server or control panelDefault Maildir location
Dovecot~/Maildir (or the path set in mail_location)
Postfix~/Maildir, or /var/mail/vhosts/<domain>/<user>/ for virtual mailboxes
Courier~/Maildir (Maildir++)
qmail~/Maildir
cPanel / WHM/home/<user>/mail/<domain>/<mailbox>/
Plesk (Linux)/var/qmail/mailnames/<domain>/<user>/Maildir/
DirectAdmin/home/<user>/imap/<domain>/<user>/Maildir/

Inside a backup archive

  • cPanel backup (the .tar.gz): mail sits under homedir/mail/<domain>/<mailbox>/, with cur, new and tmp inside.
  • Plesk backup: mail keeps the same mailnames/<domain>/<user>/Maildir/ layout once the archive is extracted.

Copy these from the server

  • The folder that holds cur/ and new/. This is the mailbox itself.
  • Every dot-folder such as .Sent, .Drafts, .Trash and .INBOX.*. These are your other folders and subfolders.
  • The files inside cur/ and new/. Each file is one email.

Safe to skip (these are not email)

  • tmp/. Holds messages still being delivered, so on a copy it is empty or stale.
  • dovecot-uidlist, dovecot.index*, dovecot.mailbox.log. Dovecot index files, rebuilt on their own.
  • maildirsize. A Courier and Maildir++ quota counter.
  • courierimapuiddb, courierimapsubscribed. Courier index and subscription files.
  • .subscriptions. The list of folders a mail app had subscribed to.
💡
Why does this matter?

Standard email clients and most conversion tools don't understand the Maildir format. They see thousands of individual files with hard-to-read names instead of readable emails. The Univik Maildir Converter reads this structure the right way: it pulls out the email content, reads the details from the filenames and turns everything into formats you can open.

Sources: The Maildir format details on this page are checked against Daniel J. Bernstein's original Maildir specification and the Dovecot and Courier mail server documentation.

FAQ  Frequently Asked Questions

Maildir Converter FAQ

Answers to common questions about converting your emails.

Maildir is an email storage format invented by Daniel J. Bernstein (djb) for the qmail mail server. Each message is saved as its own plain text email file in the standard RFC 822 / RFC 5322 format. Unlike mbox, which keeps all emails in a single file, Maildir stores each email as a separate file inside a directory.

Key characteristics:

  • Three subdirectories: Each Maildir folder contains cur (read messages), new (unread messages) and tmp (messages being delivered)
  • Unique filenames: Each email file has a unique name containing timestamp, process ID and hostname
  • Flags in filename: Message status (Seen, Replied, Flagged, Draft, Trashed, Passed) is stored in the filename after ":2,"

This format is used by Dovecot, Courier, Postfix, Qmail and many Linux mail servers because it is reliable and needs no file locking, which also makes it safe to use on shared network storage (NFS).

To do this:

  1. Download Maildir from server: Use SCP, SFTP, rsync or FTP to copy the Maildir directories to your Windows machine
  2. Typical server locations:
    • Dovecot: /var/mail/vhosts/domain/user/ or ~/Maildir
    • cPanel: /home/username/mail/domain/user/
    • Plesk: /var/qmail/mailnames/domain/user/
  3. Install and run the converter: Browse to the downloaded Maildir folder
  4. Auto-detection: The tool recognizes cur/new/tmp structure automatically
  5. Convert: Select output format and convert

Maildir format is supported by many popular Linux/Unix mail servers:

  • Dovecot, The most popular open-source IMAP server, uses Maildir by default
  • Courier Mail Server, Created Maildir++ extension with subfolder support
  • Postfix, When configured with home_mailbox = Maildir/
  • Qmail, Original creator of Maildir format
  • Exim, Supports Maildir delivery format
  • cPanel/WHM, Uses Dovecot/Courier with Maildir
  • Plesk, Stores emails in Maildir format
  • DirectAdmin, Supports Maildir storage

If your Linux mail server stores emails in individual files within cur/new/tmp directories, it's using Maildir format.

Yes, absolutely. The converter is specifically designed to handle the file-per-message storage model efficiently:

  • Fast scanning: Efficiently scans directories with thousands or millions of files
  • Memory management: Processes files in batches to handle large mailboxes
  • Progress tracking: Shows real-time progress for long conversion operations
  • Every subfolder: Automatically processes all nested Maildir++ subfolders

We've tested with mailboxes containing over 500,000 individual email files. The Enterprise license is recommended for very large server migrations.

The converter automatically preserves your complete folder hierarchy:

  • Maildir++ naming: Folders like .Sent, .Drafts, .INBOX.Clients are converted to proper folder hierarchies
  • Dot-prefix handling: The leading dot and folder separators are correctly interpreted
  • Nested folders: Deep subfolder structures (e.g., .INBOX.Work.Projects.2024) are fully supported
  • Special folders: INBOX, Sent, Drafts, Trash are mapped correctly

The output will have the same logical folder structure as your original Maildir, regardless of the output format (PST, MBOX, EML folders, etc.).

Feature Maildir mbox
Storage One file per email All emails in single file
File locking Not required Required for concurrent access
Corruption risk Low (affects single email) High (affects entire mailbox)
Backup Easy incremental backup Full file backup needed
Used by Dovecot, Courier, Qmail Unix mail, some clients

The Maildir Converter can convert it to mbox format and back again.

To migrate from Dovecot to Outlook or Exchange:

  1. Locate Dovecot Maildir: Typically at /var/mail/vhosts/ or user home directories
  2. Download to Windows: Use SCP or rsync to copy the Maildir directories
  3. Convert to PST: Use the Maildir Converter with PST output format
  4. Import to Outlook: File → Open & Export → Import/Export → Import from PST
  5. For Exchange/O365: Use the PST import wizard in Exchange Admin Center or Outlook migration tool

The Business/Enterprise license includes direct IMAP migration to Office 365 without a PST file in between.

Yes. Both cPanel and Plesk store user emails in Maildir format:

cPanel backup structure:

backup/homedir/mail/domain.com/username/

Plesk backup structure:

backup/mailnames/domain.com/username/

Steps:

  1. Extract the backup archive (tar.gz, zip)
  2. Navigate to the mail directory
  3. Point the converter to the Maildir folder
  4. Convert to your desired format

The converter handles the Maildir++ format used by these control panels, including all subfolders and quota files.

No, you can skip it. The tmp folder only holds messages that are still being delivered. On a copy or a backup it is usually empty or holds stale files, and none of it is mail you need. Copy the cur and new folders and the dot-folders such as .Sent and .Drafts. Those hold every real message.

That is usually correct, not a fault. Maildir records read state by where a message sits and by the flags in its filename. A message in the new folder, or one in cur without the S flag, was never opened on the server, so it stays unread after conversion. Messages that carry the S flag come across as read. If every message looks unread, the source flags were probably lost before conversion, for example by copying the files with a tool that renamed them.

Not directly. Thunderbird reads MBOX, not Maildir, so there is no import Maildir button. Convert the Maildir to MBOX first, then import the MBOX with the ImportExportTools NG add-on. The idea that Maildir cannot be used with Thunderbird at all is wrong. You convert it to MBOX and it imports fine.

It depends on what you have. If the source mailbox is still live on a server, doveadm (Dovecot's own tool) or imapsync copy mail straight to another server or mailbox over IMAP at no cost, and that is the cleaner route. A converter is the better choice when the server is gone or you only have a backup of the files. It also fits when you need the mail in a file format like Outlook PST or PDF instead of another live mailbox.
