 How MailEnable Thinks

The Postoffice Is the Unit of Everything

MailEnable grew up in hosting racks, so it organizes the world into postoffices: one per customer or domain, each a self-contained mail estate. Migrations that respect that structure go well.

Mail lives in MAILROOT

Postoffices\[name]\MAILROOT\[mailbox] holds each account's folders with one plain text .MAI file per message. The mail half of a postoffice is an ordinary directory tree you can count.

Identity lives in Config

Accounts, address maps, aliases and DKIM keys sit apart under Config\Postoffices and Config\DKIM as readable TAB files. Copy MAILROOT without its Config half and you have mail with no addresses attached.

Hosters exit per postoffice

Because each postoffice is self-contained, an ISP or reseller can move customers one at a time: each postoffice becomes its own Microsoft 365 tenant or Workspace domain on its own schedule.

.MAI Is Just Mail Wearing a Different Name

Inside every .MAI file is a standard RFC 822 message: headers, body, attachments, all text. The MailEnable community has traded on that fact for years.

The tools that exist

Postoffice Extract moves configuration between MailEnable servers. The ICS and VCF importers bring calendars and contacts in. The IMail converter converts toward MailEnable. Outbound to Microsoft 365 or Google: nothing shipped.

The permissions trap

Copied stores arrive without the IME_ADMIN and IME_STORE_GROUP grants and services fail quietly until icacls repairs them. Our store-level runs apply the ACL repair before the first read.

The password key trap

With password encryption enabled, account credentials only decrypt if the registry key from the old server is exported and imported. Miss it and every mailbox looks locked. It is on our checklist so it never becomes a surprise.

The provider mismatch

Configuration can live in TAB files or in SQL Server or MySQL through providers. Knowing which one your install uses decides how the account inventory is read. We check before quoting, not after starting.

A single small domain moves over IMAP with any capable client or tool in an afternoon. Keep the money.

MAILROOT already in hand

Holding a copied store and wanting files? A desktop .MAI converter delivers PST or other formats for a license fee. Ask and we will point at the right one.

MailEnable still earns its keep

The product is maintained and the Standard edition costs nothing. A patched server on a domain that works is a fine place to stay.

The quote starts making sense at multiple postoffices, webmail calendars people rely on, encrypted credential stores or mailbox counts that make one-by-one absurd.

MailEnable Concepts, Translated to the Cloud

Each MailEnable structure has a named destination in the written plan. These defaults start the conversation.

Postoffices

Each becomes a tenant or a domain at the destination. Multi-tenant hosters get a per-postoffice schedule so customers move independently.

Address maps and aliases

The TAB configuration is the source of truth. Every alias and mapping is recreated at the destination before MX changes so old addresses keep delivering.

Webmail contacts and calendars

Exported as vCard and ICS, then imported as native contacts and events with recurrences preserved rather than flattened.

Lists and groups

MailEnable list definitions become distribution groups with membership intact so the same announcement reaches the same inboxes.

DKIM and sending identity

Old DKIM keys retire with the server. Fresh keys are generated at the destination and DNS is updated in the cutover sequence, keeping deliverability unbroken.

Server-side filters

MailEnable filtering does not import anywhere. Users receive their rules as a checklist beside the setup sheet, ten minutes of clicking instead of a month of confusion.

We migrate MailEnable to Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online), Google Workspace (Gmail), Exchange Server (on-premises 2013-2019), Zimbra, Zoho Mail and other IMAP-compatible platforms. We also support MailEnable-to-MailEnable migrations for upgrades or server consolidation, plus export to PST/MBOX/EML files.

The complete estate: messages with attachments, full folder trees, webmail contacts and calendars, tasks, notes and every list. Flags, read status and timestamps travel too. The plan enumerates all of it per postoffice.

Typically yes - we need admin-level access to efficiently migrate all mailboxes. Options include: MailEnable administration console access, IMAP access with domain admin credentials or direct access to MailEnable mail directories. For hosting accounts, we can work with per-user IMAP credentials if needed.

Yes, we migrate mailing lists. MailEnable mailing lists and distribution groups are converted to appropriate destination equivalents - Microsoft 365 Distribution Groups, Google Groups or equivalent. We export member lists and recreate them on the target platform.

Yes. We regularly migrate from Windows hosting providers running MailEnable. We just need IMAP access to the mailboxes - either domain admin credentials or individual user credentials. We coordinate with you on DNS/MX changes during cutover.

A single reconfiguration per device. Modern Outlook and phones mostly autodiscover Microsoft 365, everyone gets a one-page setup sheet regardless and the first weeks include support for whoever gets stuck.
