A .bds file belongs to BUSY Accounting Software, so it opens in BUSY or in a data reader that knows its layout.
Double-clicking it, Excel and Power BI do not work. Copy the whole company folder first. Then point BUSY at the data folder with Set Data Directory, or open the copy in a reader.
You have a file called db.bds or db12022.bds and nothing happens when you open it. Or Windows asks which app to use and none of the choices look right. This guide goes through what people try, what works and what does not.
What Happens When You Try to Open a .bds File?
What did you try first? Each card says what to expect.
If no program is linked to the extension, Windows asks which app to use. Nothing on that list is built to show accounts and vouchers.
See what works →Excel will not treat the file as a workbook. Pressing Alt+E on a BUSY report is the way to get it into Excel.
Read why →A Power BI user on Microsoft's forum found that nothing accepts a .bds file, and the Access connector failed as well.
See the fix →The accounts sit in database tables inside the file, and BUSY Accounting Software is the program that presents them as a company. Other programs see a database they cannot use. That is why the file looks dead outside BUSY.
Is It Really a BUSY .bds File?
- The nameBUSY company files are called
db.bdsordb1followed by a year, such asdb12023.bds. - The folderThe file sits in a folder named COMP followed by digits, such as COMP0002.
- The neighboursOther files with the same pattern sit beside it, one for each financial year.
If your file fits none of these, ask whoever sent it which program made it. Our guide to BUSY data files explains what each file in a company folder holds.
What Should You Do Before You Open Any .bds File?
A lone year file is only a piece of a company. The settings and users sit in db.bds and every financial year has its own file. Copy all of them together and work on the copy. The original then stays exactly as it arrived.
“A .bds file is a database, not a document. Treat it like one: copy it, work on the copy and never rename it to see what happens.”
- db.bds is in the folder
- There is one year file for each financial year you expect
- No file shows a size of zero
- The folder name still starts with COMP
How to Open a .bds Company in BUSY
This route needs BUSY on the PC. The free Express edition is one way to get it. The steps follow the vendor's help for a loose company folder.
- Copy the whole company folderCopy db.bds and every year file together, with the folder name such as COMP0001. Put the copy inside a data folder of its own on the PC that has BUSY.
- Open Set Data DirectoryGo to Company, then Set Data Directory.
- Enter the data folder pathEnter the folder that contains your company folders. The vendor warns against selecting the company code. Confirm with OK.
- Open the companySelect Open Company. Your company should be in the list.
- Check the yearsLook at the financial years in the company. Each one should match a year file you copied.
If the company does not appear, the cause is usually the path, a company that is still open or a lock file left by a crash. The missing company guide goes through each one.
Can You Open a .bds File Without BUSY?
Yes, with a reader made for BUSY data. Univik BUSY Data Viewer opens the company folder in read-only mode on Windows 11 and 10. Pick the folder that holds db.bds. Our walkthrough on reading BUSY data with no BUSY installed has every step, and the viewer page shows what you will see.
Univik BUSY Data Viewer reads the files in place and changes nothing. Look first, then decide what to save.

What Does Not Work and Why?
| What you tried | What happens | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Double-click the file | Windows asks which app to use | Open the company in BUSY or in a reader |
| Open it in Excel | It does not load as a workbook | Press Alt+E on a BUSY report, or use a converter |
| Connect it in Power BI | No connector accepts it, per the community thread | Export CSV or JSON first |
| Open one year file alone | You get a piece of the company | Copy db.bds and every year file together |
| Rename the extension | Univik has not tested this | Leave the extension alone and work on a copy |
Can You Convert a .bds File to Excel, CSV or PDF?
Yes. BUSY itself saves a single report to Excel through Alt+E. A converter that reads the folder writes a whole financial year as Excel, CSV, JSON or PDF. The full comparison is in our Excel export walkthrough.
What If the File Is a BUSY Backup and Not a Company Folder?
BUSY writes its own backups from the Company menu and restores them through Company, then Restore Data. Answer No to the overwrite question and BUSY adds a new company while the old one stays. The vendor's help pages mention a backup folder with DATA and DISK1 in one place and a Data.bkp file in another, so check what you were given before you try anything. A restore needs BUSY.
Fix Common Problems With a .bds File
Do this: Close the prompt. Do not pick an app from the list. Open the company through BUSY or a reader.
Do this: Make sure the path ends at the data folder, never at a company code. If the list stays empty, follow the missing company guide linked above.
Do this: Ask for the whole COMP folder. The settings, the users and the other years sit in the files you do not have.
