When BUSY Accounting Software does not show a company, check four things in order.
A single-user company may still be open. The data directory must point to the data folder and not to the company code. A locking file left by a crash can hide the company. If the database file is damaged, restore it from a backup.
You open the program and the company list is empty, or it says no company found. Last week the books were there. Before you panic, work through the checks below. They come from the vendor's own help pages and they run from the quickest to the most serious.
What Does a Missing BUSY Company Look Like?
Which message are you seeing? Each card jumps to the fix.
BUSY opens but the list shows nothing. Last week the books were there.
Start the checks →The program loads and the screen stays blank. The vendor ties this to a locking file in the company folder.
Look for the lock file →You installed a newer release and the earlier company is not listed.
Reopen the old data →A blank list can mean that the program cannot find the files or cannot open them. The checks below follow the vendor's own help pages and run from the quickest to the most serious.
“In many of these cases the problem is the data path, not the data. Check the path first, before anyone talks about repair.”
What Should You Do Before You Change Anything?
- Copy the whole data folderSome fixes below copy or replace database files. A full copy of the folder lets you go back to where you started.
- Note the path BUSY is usingWrite down the path in Set Data Directory before you change it.
- Find your newest backupBackups come from Company > Backup Data or from a scheduled backup. Locate the latest one and check its date.
- Make sure nobody else has the company openClose BUSY on every PC that shares the data, then work on one PC.
How to Fix a BUSY Company That Is Not Showing
Work through the steps in order and stop when the company appears. Steps 5 and 6 act on a new folder, so the original stays where it was.
- Close BUSY and open it againA single-user company that is still open in the background can make BUSY report no company found. Check the taskbar, close BUSY and open it again.
- Check the data directoryGo to Company and Set Data Directory. The path should lead to the folder that contains your company folders, never to a company code. On a client PC in a multi-user setup, confirm the server's path.
- Restart the PCA crash can leave a Microsoft locking file in the company folder. That file locks the database files and can hide the company from the list. Restart the PC and look again.
- Look inside the company folderOpen the company folder and check that the data files are listed there. You should see db.bds and the year files.
- Build a new company folderMake a new folder named COMP followed by digits, in the same place as your other company folders. Use a number that no other company folder has. Copy only db.bds and the year-wise db files from the old folder into it.
- Replace a damaged database fileIf the new folder still does not show, the vendor says the database file is probably damaged. Copy db.bds from your old backup into the new folder in place of the damaged one.
- Contact BUSY supportIf the problem stays, the vendor says the data is likely corrupted. It asks you to send the data to its support address, support@busy.in, and says to expect a reply within 48 hours.
Do not delete the old company folder after you build a new one. Keep it until the books are back, checked and backed up.
How Do You Check the BUSY Data Path?
The path decides where BUSY looks for companies. The vendor's backup help tells users to pick the path up to the data folder name and stop there, without the company code. The table shows which level to pick.
| Level | Example | Select it in Set Data Directory? |
|---|---|---|
| Data folder | The folder that holds all the company folders | Yes |
| Company folder | COMP0001 | No, this is the company code |
| Company files | db.bds and db12022.bds | No, these sit inside the company folder |
A client PC on a network points to the data folder on the server. The vendor's help also shows a shortcut that carries a data path after the program's .exe command, and an additional data path option in the BUSY Agent. Check both if the path in Set Data Directory looks right and the list is still empty.
Why Is Old Data Missing After Updating BUSY?
After an update the earlier company can drop out of the list. The vendor gives two ways back, depending on what you hold.
You have backup files. Open Company, then Restore Data. Browse to the folder that holds the backup, click OK and confirm. When BUSY asks whether the company exists, Yes replaces it, No creates a new company and Cancel stops. Choose No to keep the old one.
You have a company folder. Open Company, then Set Data Directory. Key in the location of the data folder and confirm. Then choose Open Company.
What If the Company Shows but Vouchers Are Missing?
Check these before you restore anything. They come from the vendor's help on missing vouchers.
| Check | Where to look |
|---|---|
| The vouchers sit in a different company | Open the other companies in the list |
| A filter hides them | Review the date range and the sales or purchase filters on the report |
| Your login lacks rights | Sign in as the super user, or confirm the sub user has the rights |
| The voucher moved to the incomplete list | Housekeeping menu, incomplete voucher list |
| The voucher was deleted | Display, Check List, Audit Trail, if the audit trail was on |
| Monthly counts look wrong | Display menu check list, monthly voucher counts |
If none of these explain it, the vendor says to restore a backup and compare. Restore without overwriting, so the two companies sit side by side.
Can You Read the Data When BUSY Will Not List It?
A blank list does not always mean the vouchers are gone. A reader that works from the files can show what a copy of the folder holds. Univik BUSY Data Viewer opens a company folder read-only and lists accounts, items and vouchers. With a licence it saves them as Excel, CSV, JSON or PDF.
It is not a repair tool. A badly damaged file may not open in it, and Univik makes no promise that any file can be recovered. Use it to look at a copy while you decide what to do. The steps are in this guide to viewing BUSY data offline.
If the database file itself is damaged, Univik BUSY Data Recovery Software goes further than a reader. It rebuilds torn pages from a copy and labels every item it recovers.
Univik BUSY Data Viewer opens a copy of the folder and changes nothing. See the years and vouchers first, then choose your fix.

How Do You Stop a BUSY Company From Disappearing Again?
Take backups on a schedule and keep them off the PC that holds the data. Make a manual one from Company, then Backup Data, and choose All F.Y. or Selected F.Y. Set a scheduled one under Administration, Configuration and Backup Configuration, where you can give a folder path for each weekday. The BUSY Agent, a small helper program, runs scheduled backups to a folder on the PC or to Google Drive.
- Every financial year you expect is in the list
- The latest voucher date is the one you remember
- A few balances match a printed report
- You made a fresh backup straight away and copied it to a second drive
Fix Common Problems With a Missing BUSY Company
Do this: Go back to the data directory and read the path letter by letter. Then follow steps 4 to 6 on a copy of the folder.
Do this: Restore the newest backup with Overwrite set to No and look for the year there. The vendor says the data can only be retrieved if a backup exists.
Do this: Confirm the client points to the server's data folder. Check any shortcut that carries a data path.
