What is an EDB File?

EDB stands for database, and several unrelated programs use the extension. Most EDB files on a Windows PC are Extensible Storage Engine databases: an Exchange mailbox store, the Windows Search index or the Windows Update history. Engineers also meet EDB files as ETABS models and Ansys layouts. This guide shows how to tell yours apart and what to do with each one.

๐Ÿ“– What is an EDB File?

An EDB file is a database file. The three letters only say "database", so the extension tells you very little about what is inside. A file called Windows.edb and a file called Mailbox Database.edb share an extension and an engine, yet one is a disposable search index and the other holds years of company email.

Most EDB files you will meet on Windows are built on the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), a database engine that ships inside Windows itself. Microsoft uses it for Exchange Server, Windows Search, Windows Update and several other parts of the system. Outside the Microsoft world, CSI ETABS saves structural models as .EDB and Ansys uses EDB for its Electronics Database layout format.

The one rule to remember

Never delete an EDB file because it is large until you know which program made it. Two of the common types rebuild themselves. The others are your data.

๐Ÿ”Ž Which EDB File Do I Have?

The folder and the file name settle it in most cases. Match yours to one of these cards.

Windows.edb

The Windows Search index on Windows 10 and earlier.

Legacy Edge kept favourites in spartan.edb, and the catalog database catdb is ESE too. Leave these to Windows.

Inside Windows or app data folders

Windows 11 moved the search index to a file called Windows.db in the same folder, according to a Microsoft Q&A answer. A Windows 11 PC without Windows.edb is normal.

๐Ÿ”ฌ What is Inside an ESE EDB File?

An ESE database is a set of fixed-size pages arranged as B-trees, the same structure most databases use to find rows fast. The engine never writes a change straight into the .edb file. It writes it to a transaction log first and copies it into the database later. That is why an ESE .edb file always travels with companions.

# Files that belong to one ESE database

Database folder
โ”œโ”€โ”€ DataStore.edb    # the database pages
โ”œโ”€โ”€ edb.chk          # checkpoint: how far the logs are applied
โ”œโ”€โ”€ edb.log          # current transaction log
โ”œโ”€โ”€ edb00001.log     # older logs, numbered in hex
โ””โ”€โ”€ edbres00001.jrs # reserve logs for a full disk

The log prefix changes with the program. Windows Update uses the default edb prefix. Windows Search uses MSS. Exchange numbers its prefixes E00, E01 and so on, one per database. The page size changes too. Exchange 2000 and 2003 used 4 KB pages, Exchange 2007 used 8 KB and Exchange 2010 and later use 32 KB.

A database that was closed properly reads Clean Shutdown in its header. One that stopped suddenly reads Dirty Shutdown and needs its logs before the engine will open it again.

๐Ÿงช How Do You Check Any EDB File?

Windows includes esentutl.exe, the general version of the Exchange eseutil tool. It reads the header of any ESE database without changing it. Copy the file to a working folder first, then run:

esentutl /mh "D:\Work\Unknown.edb"
  • A header prints. The file is an ESE database. Check the State line for Clean Shutdown or Dirty Shutdown and the page size line.
  • An error about the database format. The file is not ESE. It is most likely an ETABS model or another program's file.
  • Access denied. A running service holds the file. Stop the service or work on a copy.

For a quick look without commands, open the file in a hex viewer. ESE files carry EF CD AB 89 at byte offset 4.

๐Ÿ’ป Is Windows.edb Safe to Delete?

Yes, with the Windows Search service stopped. Windows.edb is the search index, not your files. Windows builds it again after you delete it, and searches are slow until the rebuild finishes.

The file grows with everything Windows indexes. Large Outlook PST and OST files are the usual reason it reaches tens of gigabytes. Pick the gentlest fix first:

  1. Rebuild the index. Open Indexing Options, choose Advanced, then Rebuild.
  2. Index less. In Indexing Options, click Modify and remove large folders or Outlook from the list.
  3. Compact the file. Stop the Windows Search service and run esentutl /d on Windows.edb, then start the service again.
  4. Delete it. Stop the service, delete Windows.edb and start the service. Windows creates a fresh index.

๐Ÿ”„ What is DataStore.edb?

DataStore.edb is the database Windows Update keeps under SoftwareDistribution. It records the update history and the results of update scans. When it grows large or Windows Update keeps failing, admins reset it: stop the Windows Update and BITS services, rename the SoftwareDistribution folder, then start the services again. Windows creates a new folder and a new DataStore.edb. The only loss is the history list shown in Settings.

๐Ÿ“ง What is an Exchange EDB File?

An Exchange EDB file is a mailbox database. Every mailbox in it, with mail, calendar, contacts and tasks, lives inside that one file. It is the EDB type you must never delete to free space. Exchange only opens it on a running server in the organization that created it, so a retired server or a store that refuses to mount leaves the mail locked inside.

For that situation Univik EDB Converter reads Exchange 2000 to 2019 databases on a normal Windows PC and saves the mailboxes as PST, EML, PDF or uploads them to Office 365. These guides cover the common jobs:

๐Ÿ—๏ธ What About ETABS and Ansys EDB Files?

ETABS model (.EDB)

CSI ETABS saves each structural model as a binary .EDB database. When you open an existing model, ETABS keeps a backup with the .ebk extension. On every save it also writes a .$et text backup, and File, Export, ETABS .e2k Text File creates the same text format on demand (CSI documentation).

Only ETABS opens the .EDB. A model from a newer release may not open in an older one, so swap .e2k files between versions.

Ansys Electronics Database

Ansys EDB carries printed circuit board layouts into simulation. PCB tools such as Altium Designer export it as a folder named BoardName.edb with an edb.def file inside (Altium documentation).

Open it in Ansys Electronics Desktop or SIwave by pointing the import at the folder, not at edb.def alone.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

An EDB file is a database file. The extension is shared by unrelated programs. Most EDB files on Windows are Extensible Storage Engine databases, such as an Exchange mailbox store, the Windows Search index or the Windows Update history. Engineers also meet EDB files as ETABS structural models and as Ansys Electronics Database layouts.

Look at the folder and the name first. Windows.edb sits under ProgramData\Microsoft\Search, DataStore.edb under Windows\SoftwareDistribution and an Exchange store usually carries a database name or priv1.edb. For an unknown file, run esentutl /mh on it from a Command Prompt. If it prints a database header, it is an Extensible Storage Engine file. If it fails, it belongs to another program such as ETABS.

It depends on the file. Windows.edb and DataStore.edb can be removed after their services are stopped, because Windows rebuilds them. An Exchange EDB file holds email and must never be deleted to free space. An ETABS or Ansys EDB file is your project, so delete it only if you have a copy.

Windows.edb holds the search index, and it grows with every file and email Windows indexes. Large Outlook data files are the usual cause. Rebuild the index from Indexing Options, remove big folders from the indexed locations or compact the file with esentutl /d while the Windows Search service is stopped.

They are the transaction logs and checkpoint file of an Extensible Storage Engine database. Edb is the default log prefix, so programs like Windows Update write edb.log and edb.chk beside DataStore.edb. Exchange uses prefixes such as E00 and Windows Search uses MSS. Do not delete the logs of a database that is in use.

No. Outlook opens PST and OST files, not EDB files. An Exchange EDB file has to be converted to PST first, and other EDB types have nothing to do with email.

Open it in ETABS. A model saved in a newer ETABS version may not open in an older one, so ask the sender for an e2k text export, which older versions can import.

Extensible Storage Engine files carry the value 0x89ABCDEF at byte offset 4 of the header, stored as EF CD AB 89. Exchange stores, Windows.edb and DataStore.edb all share it. ETABS and Ansys files do not use this header.
