Email providers change login rules more often than server addresses. Frontier email went through a major change in 2024. Here is what it means for setting up mail in 2026.
Latest update
Frontier email is now run entirely by Yahoo. Since March 20, 2024, Yahoo handles Frontier mail and support. Frontier no longer runs its own webmail, so you sign in at mail.yahoo.com with your Frontier address.

Email apps need a Yahoo app password. Your normal Frontier password is rejected in Outlook and Apple Mail. You must generate a Yahoo app password and use that in the app.

Frontier email is a Yahoo account under the hood. Two things must be right before any app connects.
1. Generate a Yahoo app password
Yahoo rejects your normal password in third party mail apps. You need a generated app password instead. Otherwise every connection fails with a password error.

About Frontier Mail#
Frontier Communications is a US internet and phone provider. Its email service, once run in house, is now operated entirely by Yahoo for its long time subscribers.
Frontier launched its own email around 2015 and gathered more addresses through acquisitions, including frontiernet.net. On March 20, 2024 it handed the whole email service to Yahoo. That is the one fact that changes everything here: your mailbox is a Yahoo mailbox now, so you sign in at Yahoo. Mail apps need a Yahoo app password instead of your old Frontier password.

Frontier Email Is Now Yahoo#
This is the one thing that trips up every Frontier setup in 2026. On March 20, 2024, Frontier moved its whole email service to Yahoo. Your address still ends in @frontier.com or @frontiernet.net, but the mailbox behind it is a Yahoo mailbox. Two consequences follow. Both are easy once you know them.
1. The servers are Yahoo servers
Set your app to the Yahoo hosts. The old imap.frontier.com style names still resolve to the same system, so an existing setup will not suddenly break, but the Yahoo names are where the mailbox truly lives.
2. Mail apps need a Yahoo app password
Yahoo does not accept your normal password in Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird. You generate a one time app password in Yahoo Account Security and paste that into the app. Full steps are in the app password section.

IMAP is the incoming protocol most people should use. It keeps your mail on the Yahoo server so every device shows the same inbox:

Because Frontier mail is Yahoo, an app password is required for every email app. Here is which password works where:

How to Generate an App Password
- Sign in at the Yahoo Account Security page using your Frontier address at login.yahoo.com.
- Find "Create app password" under External connections, sometimes shown as Generate app password.
- Pick your app or type a name, for example "Outlook" or "iPhone Mail", then continue.
- Copy the code Yahoo shows. It appears once, so copy it before you close the window.
- Paste it as the password in your email app, for both incoming and outgoing. Spaces do not matter.
Set Up Frontier in Email Clients#
Incoming is imap.mail.yahoo.com and outgoing is smtp.mail.yahoo.com in every app. Every app needs a Yahoo app password. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:
Outlook (Windows and Mac)
- Open Outlook → File → Add Account [new Outlook: Settings → Accounts → Add account].
- Enter your Frontier address, open Advanced options and check "Let me set up my account manually".
- Choose IMAP and enter
imap.mail.yahoo.comport993SSL, thensmtp.mail.yahoo.comport465SSL for outgoing. - Paste your Yahoo app password, not your normal password, when Outlook asks. Older Outlook 2013 often will not connect, so use New Outlook.
- Finish and send yourself a test. If it rejects the password, generate a fresh app password and try again.
Apple Mail (macOS)
- Open Mail → Settings → Accounts → Add Account.
- Choose Other Mail Account. Do not pick the Yahoo preset, since manual setup is more reliable for Frontier addresses.
- Enter your name, Frontier address and Yahoo app password, then continue.
- Set incoming to
imap.mail.yahoo.comand outgoing tosmtp.mail.yahoo.com. - Enable Mail in the checkbox list and finish.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account.
- Tap Other, then Add Mail Account. Avoid the Yahoo preset and set it up by hand.
- Enter your name and Frontier address, using the Yahoo app password, then tap Next.
- Keep IMAP selected. Incoming
imap.mail.yahoo.com, outgoingsmtp.mail.yahoo.com. - Tap Save and wait for iOS to verify the account.
Android
- Open your mail app (Gmail app, Samsung Email or another), then Add account.
- Choose Other, then IMAP and set it up manually rather than as Yahoo.
- Enter your Frontier address and Yahoo app password. If auto setup fails, pick Manual setup.
- Enter the servers:
imap.mail.yahoo.com993 SSL incoming,smtp.mail.yahoo.com465 SSL outgoing. - Finish setup and pull down to sync your inbox.
Thunderbird
- Open Thunderbird → Account Settings → Account Actions → Add Mail Account.
- Enter your name, Frontier address and Yahoo app password, then select Continue.
- Thunderbird may detect Yahoo servers. Confirm IMAP is selected and the host is imap.mail.yahoo.com.
- If detection fails, choose Configure manually and enter the Yahoo server values above.
- Select Done. Folders sync on first open.
Frontier Webmail Settings#
Server settings connect your apps. These control how the mailbox behaves. Since Frontier mail is Yahoo, you find them at mail.yahoo.com under Settings, then More Settings.
Signature
Settings, then More Settings, then Writing email. A signature here shows at Yahoo only. Outlook and Thunderbird keep their own separate signature.
Vacation Auto Reply
Settings, then More Settings, then Vacation response. Set start and end dates so it turns off by itself. It runs on Yahoo, so it replies even when your computer is off.
Filters and Folders
Settings, then More Settings, then Filters. Rules here run on the server, so they sort mail before your phone or Outlook sees it. Client side rules only run while that app is open.
Spam and Blocked Senders
Settings, then More Settings, then Security and privacy. Add addresses to the blocked list. Blocked mail is kept out of your inbox.

Frontier Sending and Storage Limits#
Because Frontier mail is Yahoo, the limits are Yahoo limits. Hit one and sending pauses for a while. Know the rough numbers before you bulk forward or migrate a mailbox:

Troubleshooting Frontier Connections#
Find the exact error your email app shows, then apply the fix:

Reader Reported Fixes
Two fixes that come up again and again in Frontier setups, beyond the error table above.
Test at mail.yahoo.com before touching the app. Sign in on the web and send yourself a message. If that works, the account is healthy and the fault is in the app, almost always the app password. This one check saves the most time.
Old Outlook versions may never connect. Outlook 2013 and similar often cannot handle the Yahoo sign in. Use New Outlook or the Yahoo Mail app instead. Turn off ad blockers on the Yahoo Mail website if webmail behaves oddly.
The Frontier to Yahoo Move?#
What changed. On March 20, 2024, Frontier moved email to Yahoo. Your @frontier.com or @frontiernet.net address still works, but it now uses the Yahoo servers on this page and a Yahoo app password, not the old Frontier login.
First time on the new system? Sign in at mail.yahoo.com with your Frontier address to confirm access, then generate an app password for your mail app. After that, every value above works.
Planning to leave for good? Back up the mailbox first. ISP linked accounts are sometimes closed after you cancel service and there is no recovery once that happens.

IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. Reads mail that stays on the server, so all your devices see the same inbox, folders and read status.
POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to 1 device. On Frontier the POP host is pop.mail.yahoo.com, since the mailbox is on Yahoo.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sends your outgoing mail. On Frontier the send host is smtp.mail.yahoo.com and it needs your app password.
SSL / TLS / STARTTLS
Encryption for the connection. SSL/TLS encrypts from the start (ports 993, 995, 465). STARTTLS upgrades a plain connection (port 587).
App Password
A code from Yahoo Account Security that replaces your real password inside email apps. On Frontier it is required for every mail client.
Yahoo Account Security
The Yahoo page at login.yahoo.com where you manage passwords and create app passwords for Frontier mail. It replaced Frontier's old account tools.
