What is a VCF File?

VCF stands for Virtual Contact File, the file a vCard is saved as. Inside is plain text: each contact is a block from BEGIN:VCARD to END:VCARD, with one line per property such as FN for the name, TEL for a phone number and PHOTO for a picture encoded as text. One file can hold one contact or thousands.

Three versions are in use. vCard 2.1 (1996) is what old phones write. 3.0 (RFC 2426, 1998) is what Outlook and Google write. 4.0 (RFC 6350, 2011) is what iPhone and current apps prefer. Devices are fussy about which one they accept, which is why a converter that changes the version saves so much time.

Open the .vcf in Univik vCard Converter, click Export and pick Excel (.xlsx). Every contact becomes a row, with separate columns for each phone type, email type, address line, company, title and birthday. Excel cannot open a .vcf on its own, so a converter or a CSV step is always needed.
