 Key Features

What Univik Tally Data Viewer Does Six jobs the viewer handles on a PC with no accounting software on it

Reads All Three Data Formats

A .500 folder from Tally 7.2, a 5-digit .900 company from Tally.ERP 9 and a 6-digit .1800 company from TallyPrime 3.0 or later all open in the same window.

Opens .001 Backups Directly

Point it at TBK900.001 or a TBK1800 backup and the company opens as it was saved. No restore step and no spare data path.

Reads Data a Newer Release Saved

Data a client opened in a newer TallyPrime release no longer loads in an older one. The viewer opens such files on a PC with any release installed or none.

Opens Companies Tally Calls Damaged

A company that shows Repair Required still opens in the viewer, so you can check the books before anyone runs a repair.

Never Writes to the Data

The company folder and the backup open read-only. Nothing is migrated, repaired or rewritten, so the files stay exactly as they were.

Free to View, Licensed to Export

Browse every section for free. A licence adds export in the same software, covered on the Tally Data Converter page.

 The Short Version

Why Won't Tally Data Open Without Tally?

Because the accounting software shows a company only inside a working, licensed copy of itself. Two situations lock people out of their own books.

Trap 1: The Licence Has to Stay Active

A TallyPrime licence turns to Educational mode when the PC has not connected to the internet for 30 days, per Tally's licensing FAQ. TallyPrime's own export, ODBC and XML options also need it running with a company loaded.

Trap 2: Backups and Newer Data Need Tally First

A .001 backup opens only after a Restore. Data saved by a higher TallyPrime release gets an Unable to open the company error in a lower one.

The Way Out: Read the Company Folder Directly

Univik Tally Data Viewer reads the .500, .900 and .1800 files themselves, so it needs no install, no licence and no restore. Our advice: copy the company folder or backup to your PC first and open the copy. The tool never writes to it, and the copy keeps the original safe from everything else.

 What It Opens

Which Files Does the Tally Data Viewer Open?

.1800

TallyPrime 3.0 and Later

Files such as Manager.1800 and TranMgr.1800 inside a 6-digit folder like 100000.

.900

Tally.ERP 9 and TallyPrime 1.0 to 2.1

Company.900, Manager.900 and TranMgr.900 in a 5-digit folder such as 10000. Tally 9 data uses it too.

.500

Tally 5.4, 6.3 and 7.2

Company.500, Manager.500 and numbered files such as Tr01263.500, the oldest format still in use.

.001

Backup Files

TBK900.001 from Tally.ERP 9 and TBK1800 backups from TallyPrime, opened without a restore.

 Three Steps

How to Open Tally Data Without Tally

View Tally data without software, from a company folder or a backup.

1

Install the Viewer

Download the setup and install it on any Windows 11 or 10 PC. Tally does not need to be on that PC.

2

Choose the Data or Backup

Select a .001 backup file or the company folder, such as 10000 or 100000. Work on a copy when the files came from another PC.

3

Browse the Company

Open the masters and vouchers section by section. To save them, add a licence and export to Excel, CSV, PDF or another format.

 Real Situations

When Do You Need a Tally Data Viewer?

Licence Lapsed or a New PC

The books sit on an old disk, but Tally is not installed or the licence has dropped to Educational mode. Open the folder and check the ledgers and vouchers.

Client Data From a Newer Release

A CA still on Tally.ERP 9 receives .1800 files from a client on TallyPrime. The viewer reads them without an upgrade.

Only a Backup Survived

A TBK900.001 on a pen drive is all that is left of a company. See what is inside before you restore it anywhere.

 Finding Your Files

Where Is Tally Data Stored on Your PC?

Good to know

TallyPrime shows the folder under Alt+Y (Data) > Data Path. Every company gets a numbered folder of its own: 5 digits such as 10000 for Tally.ERP 9 and TallyPrime up to 2.1, and 6 digits such as 100000 after migration to TallyPrime 3.0.

Lost the path? Search the drive for Company.900 or Company.1800. The folder holding that file is the company folder to open. Backups end in .001, such as TBK900.001. The data file guide lists every file in the folder.

Operating System

Windows 11 or 10 with Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 or newer installed.

Tally Not Required

This Tally data viewer reads the files itself. Neither TallyPrime nor Tally.ERP 9 has to be on the PC, licensed or not.

Access to the Files

Read access to the company folder or the backup file is enough. Copy files from another PC or a pen drive first.

Licence Only for Export

Viewing needs no licence. Personal ($99, 2 PCs), Business ($199, 10 PCs) and Forensics ($299, 50 PCs) licences unlock export.

 Questions

Tally Data Viewer Questions

Install Univik Tally Data Viewer on a Windows 11 or 10 PC, then select the company folder or a .001 backup. The viewer reads the .500, .900 or .1800 files directly, so it needs no TallyPrime, no Tally.ERP 9 and no licence. Viewing is free.

Yes, viewing is free. Export is the paid part: the free version saves 10 items per section, and a licence from $99 for 2 PCs removes that limit. Every licence carries a 30-day money-back guarantee.

All of them. It reads .500 data from releases 5.4, 6.3 and 7.2. It also reads .900 data from Tally 9 through TallyPrime 2.1 and .1800 data from TallyPrime 3.0 onward. Both 5-digit and 6-digit company folders open.

Yes. Tally itself needs a restore before it shows a backup. The viewer opens TBK900.001, TBK1800, TDBK1800 and TSDBK1800 backup files directly and shows the company inside.

Yes. The installer is signed, folders and backups open read-only and everything runs on your own PC.

No. It opens the company folder and backup files read-only and never writes to them. It does not migrate, repair or rewrite the data, so the files stay as they were.

Yes. A lower TallyPrime release refuses .1800 data saved by a higher one and reports that it cannot open the company. The viewer reads .1800 files on any PC, so you can check a client's books without upgrading.

Biz Analyst syncs reports to a phone through Tally's ODBC port, so Tally must be open with the companies loaded for each sync. The viewer reads the company files on a Windows PC with no Tally at all, backups and newer-release data included.

TallyPrime lists the location under Alt+Y (Data) > Data Path. Inside it, every company has a numbered folder with files such as Company.900 or Company.1800.

Yes. A company marked as damaged or Repair Required still opens in the viewer for reading. Read the books in the viewer before running Tally's repair, and keep a copy of the folder.

No. The software is built for Windows 11 and Windows 10 on .NET Framework 4.8 or higher. A Mac user can open it in a Windows virtual machine, or copy the company folder over to a Windows PC.
