View Everything in the PUB File
Every element stored in a Microsoft Publisher document is visible in Univik PUB Viewer at pixel-accurate quality.
Key Features
The publisher viewer Microsoft never released. Built to open any PUB file on Windows, from any Publisher version, without Publisher installed.
Univik PUB Viewer reads PUB files using its own parser. No Microsoft Publisher installation, no Microsoft 365 subscription, no Office activation. This means the viewer keeps working now that Publisher has left Microsoft 365 (October 1, 2026), for anyone who only needs to read historical PUB files rather than convert them.
Publisher records exactly where every frame, image and shape sits on the page. The viewer honours those stored positions when drawing each page, so what appears on screen matches what Publisher itself would show: text lands where the designer put it, images display at full resolution and the embedded typography renders true to the original.
Every generation of the format is covered, from the original 1991 release through the last perpetual edition and Microsoft 365. Version detection is automatic. The viewer identifies which era a file belongs to from its internal signature and renders it accordingly, so a publication saved in 1995 opens as readily as one saved yesterday.
Browse all pages using the thumbnail panel. Zoom from 10% to 1600% for precise inspection of small text or fine print detail. Select any element to see its properties. Print directly from the viewer with page range selection. For documents you need in another format, the PUB Converter handles export to PDF, Word and more.
Everything happens on your own PC. The viewer software has no server component and needs no internet access, so a publication never leaves the machine it lives on. It also runs on air-gapped machines with no network access, the setup that secure and restricted environments require. For organisations whose desktop publishing archives hold confidential material, that offline design is the point. There is nothing to upload.
Click any element to view its properties: exact position, dimensions, font name and size, image resolution and colour values. The Document Properties panel shows file size, page dimensions, Publisher version, creation date and embedded metadata. Useful for IT teams auditing Publisher archives or verifying document integrity before migration.
How It Works
To view a PUB file without Publisher, drag the file onto a PUB viewer on Windows and click through its pages. Three steps cover it.
Download and install Univik PUB Viewer. Drag and drop any PUB file onto the viewer window, or go to File then Open and browse to your document. The viewer accepts PUB files from all Publisher versions. No format selection required.
The page thumbnail panel shows all pages of the document. Click any page to view it at full resolution. Use the zoom controls to inspect fine detail. Click any text frame or image to view its properties including position, size, font name and image resolution.
Print any page or the full document directly from the viewer with complete layout preservation. If you need to save the document in PDF, Word or another format, the Univik PUB Converter handles that. One-click upgrade from within the viewer.
Why There Is No Official Publisher Viewer
“Unfortunately, Publisher doesn’t have a viewer for opening and viewing Publisher (.pub) files.”
Microsoft Support documentation
Unlike Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which all have free viewers, Publisher has never had one. The only official option Microsoft offered was downloading a Publisher trial and using the expired version as a viewer. That option has ended. The trial went away when Publisher left Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026, and support for perpetual Publisher 2021 ends on October 13, 2026.
Univik PUB Viewer was built specifically to fill this gap. It is the purpose-built publisher file viewer that Microsoft never provided.
Options for Opening PUB Files: Comparison
| Method | Works | Free | After 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Publisher (M365) | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ |
| Microsoft Publisher viewer | Does not exist | N/A | N/A |
| LibreOffice Draw | Partial | ✓ | ✓ |
| Upload-based online viewers | Partial | ✓ | ✓ |
| Univik PUB Viewer FREE | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
LibreOffice Draw opens many PUB files but complex layouts with multiple columns, overlapping elements and custom fonts frequently render incorrectly. Upload-based online viewers send your file to external servers. Univik PUB Viewer renders complex layouts accurately, 100% offline.
Searching for an online PUB viewer? Most browser-based options work by uploading your document to someone else's server, which is a real problem for business files, client work and anything confidential. The Univik Online PUB Viewer is the exception: it renders the file inside your own browser with no upload at all. For full pages, complex layouts and pixel-accurate fonts, the free desktop viewer on this page remains the stronger tool.

Free DownloadPublisher Left Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026
Microsoft retired Publisher from Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026. Subscribers can no longer open .pub files in Publisher. Your PUB files remain on disk and nothing is deleted. Univik PUB Viewer lets you continue reading every PUB file in your archive after the retirement date, without a Publisher subscription.
If you also need to save those files in PDF, Word or another permanent format, with or without Publisher, the Univik PUB Converter handles the conversion. View with the Viewer. Convert with the Converter.
Publisher Timeline
About the Format
The short version is simple. The PUB format is binary, proprietary and was never documented by Microsoft, so almost nothing outside Publisher renders it reliably. That is the gap this viewer fills.
Microsoft Publisher stored every document as a proprietary binary file and never published a specification for it. Word, Excel, Acrobat and most other applications have no way to read one. Even LibreOffice Draw, which relies on a reverse-engineered parser, fails on complex layouts, custom fonts and older Publisher versions.
Univik PUB Viewer reads the binary directly with a purpose-built parser, so complex publications render accurately rather than partially. For the full technical breakdown of the container structure, file signatures and version differences, see the PUB file format reference.

From Viewing to Converting
Univik PUB Viewer lets you open, read, inspect and print any PUB file. If you also need to save it in another format such as PDF for archiving, Word for editing, JPG for images or HTML for web publishing. The Univik PUB Converter takes over.

Why Univik
Microsoft confirmed there is no Publisher viewer. LibreOffice Draw partially opens PUB files but fails on complex layouts. Upload-based online viewers send your files to external servers. Univik PUB Viewer is the purpose-built, 100% offline alternative for Windows.
