Publisher records exactly where every frame, image and shape sits on the page. The viewer honours those stored positions when drawing each page, so what appears on screen matches what Publisher itself would show: text lands where the designer put it, images display at full resolution and the embedded typography renders true to the original.
Every generation of the format is covered, from the original 1991 release through the last perpetual edition and Microsoft 365. Version detection is automatic. The viewer identifies which era a file belongs to from its internal signature and renders it accordingly, so a publication saved in 1995 opens as readily as one saved yesterday.
Browse all pages using the thumbnail panel. Zoom from 10% to 1600% for precise inspection of small text or fine print detail. Select any element to see its properties. Everything happens on your own PC. The viewer has no server component and needs no internet access, so a publication never leaves the machine it lives on. For organisations whose Publisher archives hold confidential material, that offline design is the point. There is simply nothing to upload.

Unlike Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which all have free viewers, Publisher has never had one. The only official option Microsoft offered was downloading a Publisher trial and using the expired version as a viewer. That option ends in October 2026 when the trial stops being available (perpetual Publisher 2021 support also ends October 1, 2026).

Microsoft is retiring Publisher on October 1, 2026. The application stops working for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Your PUB files remain on disk but Publisher can no longer open them. About the Format
The short version is simple. The PUB format is binary, proprietary and was never documented by Microsoft, so almost nothing outside Publisher renders it reliably. That is the gap this viewer fills.
Microsoft Publisher stored every document as a proprietary binary file and never published a specification for it. Word, Excel, Acrobat and most other applications have no way to read one, and even LibreOffice Draw, which relies on a reverse-engineered parser, fails on complex layouts, custom fonts and older Publisher versions.
