IMAP Server imap.xs4all.nl
IMAP Port 993 (SSL/TLS)
SMTP Server smtp.xs4all.nl

Quick answer: XS4ALL mail uses imap.xs4all.nl on 993 for IMAP or pop.xs4all.nl on 995 for POP3, each over SSL. Sending is smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL and authentication. Sign in with your full xs4all.nl address and your XS4ALL password. The KPN servers work too, since XS4ALL now runs on KPN. Worried the service is closing? Your email stays.

Every setting on this page is verified with live IMAP and SMTP connections from Univik email software. We build email backup and converter tools since 2013, so we test against these servers every day. See what changed →

What Changed Recently#

XS4ALL now runs on KPN, though the XS4ALL servers still work. Here is the current status and what a xs4all.nl address needs today.

Worth knowing

XS4ALL now runs on KPN. The brand was retired, but xs4all.nl mail keeps working on the KPN platform.

Worth knowing

Two sets of servers work. You can use the XS4ALL servers like imap.xs4all.nl. The KPN servers like imap.kpnmail.nl reach the same mailbox.

Worth knowing

Sign in through your KPN ID. XS4ALL logins are now linked to a KPN ID, so a lost password is recovered through KPN.

Current status: XS4ALL mail uses imap.xs4all.nl on 993 or pop.xs4all.nl on 995 for incoming. Sending is smtp.xs4all.nl on 465, each over SSL. Sign in with your full xs4all.nl address and your XS4ALL password.

Before You Begin#

Handle these two basics before anything else. Skip them and your email app will reject the connection even when every server value is correct.

1. Create the mailbox

Incoming is imap.xs4all.nl on 993 or pop.xs4all.nl on 995. Sending is smtp.xs4all.nl on 465. The KPN servers work too.

Where: Any email app

2. Your XS4ALL password and KPN ID

The mailbox is linked to a KPN ID. Set or reset the xs4all.nl password through your KPN account.

About XS4ALL#

XS4ALL was one of the first internet providers in the Netherlands, founded in 1993. KPN retired the brand. Its xs4all.nl email now runs on the KPN Mail platform.

XS4ALL began in 1993 as a pioneering Dutch internet provider and later became part of KPN. In 2020 KPN folded the XS4ALL brand into its own, though the xs4all.nl addresses stayed live. For apps you have a choice. The XS4ALL servers imap.xs4all.nl and smtp.xs4all.nl still work. The KPN servers imap.kpnmail.nl and smtp.kpnmail.nl reach the same mailbox.

Same mailbox, two host names: imap.xs4all.nl or imap.kpnmail.nl both reach it. Outgoing is smtp.xs4all.nl or smtp.kpnmail.nl.

XS4ALL Webmail Login#

You can always read your mail in a browser. The official pages are:

Mijn KPN

mijn.kpn.com

KPN Service

kpn.com/service

Watch out for fake support pages. Many pages ranking for email settings show a phone number and ask you to call for "expert setup help". XS4ALL and Univik never ask you to call a number to enter server settings. Everything you need is free on this page.

Find Your Settings#

XS4ALL settings are the same for every xs4all.nl address. Incoming comes from imap.xs4all.nl or pop.xs4all.nl, while sending leaves through smtp.xs4all.nl. The KPN hosts are the alternative.

  1. Open your email app and add a new account.
  2. Choose IMAP on 993 or POP3 on 995.
  3. Set incoming to imap.xs4all.nl with SSL.
  4. Set outgoing to smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL and a login.
XS4ALL or KPN host? Both reach the same mailbox. Use imap.xs4all.nl on 993 with smtp.xs4all.nl on 465. If an app struggles, imap.kpnmail.nl on 993 with smtp.kpnmail.nl on 587 works. Keep SSL on each.

XS4ALL IMAP Settings#

IMAP keeps a XS4ALL mailbox in sync. Mail stays on the server, so a laptop and a phone read one shared inbox. The incoming host is imap.xs4all.nl over 993.

IMAP Serverimap.xs4all.nl

EncryptionSSL/TLS (required)
UsernameYour full xs4all.nl address

XS4ALL POP3 Settings#

POP3 downloads mail to 1 device. Pick it only if you want a local copy on a single computer. Not sure? See the comparison below.

POP3 Serverpop.xs4all.nl

EncryptionSSL/TLS (required)
UsernameYour full email address
PasswordYour mailbox password
Careful with POP3 delete settings. Some clients remove mail from the server after download. Check "leave a copy on the server" if you still want mail in webmail.

XS4ALL SMTP Settings#

Stay on the secure ports: XS4ALL lists 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP3 over SSL. The plain ports 143 and 110 exist but send your login unencrypted, so keep SSL set.

SMTP handles outgoing mail. If you can read mail but not send it, the problem is here.

SMTP Serversmtp.xs4all.nl
Port (SSL)465
Port (STARTTLS)587
EncryptionSSL or STARTTLS (required)

AuthenticationRequired. Switch on outgoing server authentication in the client.
Nothing sending? Put sending on 465 with SSL. Many home connections block port 25. Port 587 with STARTTLS also works if 465 is blocked. Keep outgoing authentication on.
Sending refused? Turn on outgoing authentication and use smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL. Port 587 with STARTTLS is the alternate. The KPN host smtp.kpnmail.nl works too.

Check XS4ALL Settings Online#

You don't need to download anything to check XS4ALL settings online. This page is the lookup: every value is verified, current and copyable straight from your browser. Not sure your address is a xs4all.nl one? Type it below to check in a moment.

Does my email address use these settings?

Runs in your browser only. Your address is never sent anywhere or stored.

Want to verify the account itself before configuring an app? Sign in at XS4ALL webmail, which confirms your address and password work. If webmail opens, any email app connects with the tables above.

Look Up IMAP Settings for Any Email Domain#

This page covers XS4ALL. For every other address, work email on a company domain included, we run a free online lookup database: imapsettings.com.

imapsettings.com

Complete email settings database, by Univik

Check IMAP settings online →

Enter any email address and get the incoming and outgoing server settings for that domain in 1 step:

Incoming server: hostname, port, SSL/TLS and username format
Outgoing server: SMTP hostname, port and encryption

Your address is used only to find the settings for that domain. Nothing is stored or shared.

Username and Password#

Both come from your XS4ALL account. The username is your full xs4all.nl address. The password is your XS4ALL email password, now linked to your KPN ID. There is no separate app password.

Username is the full address

Type your full xs4all.nl address in, with the part after the at sign. A bare mailbox name is turned down.

Put that same address on both incoming and outgoing.

Password is the mailbox one

This is your XS4ALL email password, now linked to your KPN ID. Change it through your KPN account when an app keeps refusing it.

XS4ALL signs you in through your KPN ID password, so there is no separate app password to manage.

Forgot the password? Open your KPN account, go to your KPN ID settings, then reset your XS4ALL email password there. Change it in each app after that.

Set Up XS4ALL in Email Clients#

The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:

Outlook (Windows and Mac)

  1. In Outlook select Add Account, then turn on manual setup under Advanced options.
  2. Choose IMAP and set incoming to imap.xs4all.nl on 993 with SSL.
  3. Set outgoing to smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL and a login.
  4. Enter the full address and mailbox password when Outlook prompts you.
  5. Send a test message to yourself to prove both paths.

Apple Mail (macOS)

  1. In Mail select Add Account, then pick Other Mail Account.
  2. Give your name, xs4all.nl address and password, then continue.
  3. Enter imap.xs4all.nl for incoming and smtp.xs4all.nl for outgoing.
  4. Keep the SSL ports so nothing sends in plain text.
  5. Save and wait for the mailbox to load.

iPhone and iPad

  1. In Settings open Mail, then tap Mail Accounts and Add Account.
  2. Tap Other then Add Mail Account and fill your details.
  3. Keep IMAP chosen and put imap.xs4all.nl for incoming with smtp.xs4all.nl for outgoing.
  4. Leave the secure ports iOS fills, since XS4ALL expects SSL.
  5. Tap Save and let iOS run its check.

Android

  1. Open your mail app and tap Add account, then Other or IMAP.
  2. Put in your address and password. Switch to manual setup if it stalls.
  3. For incoming use imap.xs4all.nl on 993 over SSL.
  4. For outgoing use smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 over SSL.
  5. Save and swipe down to fetch your mail.

Thunderbird

  1. In Thunderbird pick Account Actions, then Add Mail Account.
  2. Type your name, xs4all.nl address and password, then Continue.
  3. Wait for detection, then make sure IMAP with SSL is picked.
  4. If detection fails, type imap.xs4all.nl and smtp.xs4all.nl in yourself.
  5. Hit Done and the folders fill in on the first sync.

XS4ALL Webmail Settings#

Server settings connect your apps. These controls decide how the mailbox behaves on the server. They live in XS4ALL webmail at webmail.xs4all.nl.

Signature

Add one in the XS4ALL webmail preferences. It rides on mail sent from the browser. A desktop app keeps its own signature.

Vacation Auto Reply

Turn on a holiday reply in XS4ALL webmail. The server sends it, so it goes out even when your computer is off.

Filters and Folders

Build filters in XS4ALL webmail. A server side rule sorts a message before any device downloads it. An in app rule only runs while that app is open.

Spam and Blocked Senders

XS4ALL screens incoming mail for spam. Block unwanted senders in XS4ALL webmail. Flagged mail lands in the junk folder for a look.

POP3 vs IMAP#

FeatureIMAPPOP3
Where mail livesOn the XS4ALL serverDownloaded to 1 device
Multiple devices✅ Everything stays in sync❌ Each device sees different mail
Sent and deleted mail✅ Synced everywhere⚠️ Stays only on that device
Offline reading⚠️ Cached mail only✅ Full local copy

Our verdict: pick IMAP unless you have a clear reason not to. For a permanent offline archive of your XS4ALL mailbox, a backup tool handles it better than plain POP3.

XS4ALL Sending and Storage Limits#

A few details are worth knowing before you move a mailbox or bulk forward. Here is how XS4ALL mail is set up:

Troubleshooting XS4ALL Connections#

Find the exact error your email app shows, then apply the fix:

Error you seeWhat it meansFix
Username or password rejected Short username or wrong password Use your full xs4all.nl address with your XS4ALL password. A bare mailbox name is turned down.
Cannot send on port 25 ISP blocks the default SMTP port Switch outgoing to smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL and a login. Port 587 with STARTTLS is the alternate.
The XS4ALL servers will not connect Use the KPN hosts instead Switch incoming to imap.kpnmail.nl on 993 and outgoing to smtp.kpnmail.nl on 587. Your xs4all.nl address works on both.
A KPN ID prompt keeps appearing The sign-in was not renewed Sign in again through your KPN ID, then re-enter the password in the app. This clears the repeating prompt.
Cannot connect to server Wrong port or encryption Set 993 with SSL incoming and 465 with SSL outgoing. A firewall on your own machine can block it as well.
Repeated password prompt Short username or a typo Clear the saved login, then put in the full address with the mailbox password.
Messages stuck in Outbox SMTP authentication is off Enable "outgoing server requires authentication" with the same login as incoming mail.
homepages.xs4all.nl is gone That service closed in 2026 Download your copy from KPN before 1 October 2026. Your email is separate and keeps working.
Worried your xs4all.nl email will stop Email is not part of the wind-down The address keeps working until you delete it. On a KPN plan it becomes an alias on your KPN mailbox.

Reader Reported Fixes

Try the KPN hosts. If the XS4ALL servers refuse to connect, set incoming to imap.kpnmail.nl and outgoing to smtp.kpnmail.nl. The same xs4all.nl address and password work there.

Test the login in webmail first. Sign in at webmail.xs4all.nl with your address and password. If webmail opens, the credentials are right and the issue is in the app settings.

What KPN Is Retiring at XS4ALL #

Reports say XS4ALL is being wound down. That is true for some services, but your email is not one of them. KPN is retiring XS4ALL one service at a time.

Usenet access through news.kpn.nl closed in May 2026. The personal web space at homepages.xs4all.nl closed on 1 July 2026, though a copy stays downloadable until 1 October 2026. If you had a site or files there, save them before that window shuts.

Your xs4all.nl email is the part that stays. The address keeps working until you delete it. When you move to a regular KPN subscription, it becomes an alias on a KPN mailbox, so mail sent to xs4all.nl still lands in your inbox. Nothing about your server settings changes today.

Moving Mail In or Out?#

XS4ALL mail speaks plain IMAP, so a mailbox moves in or out like any standard account. Each folder stays on the server until the copy finishes.

Take a copy first. Back up the mailbox before a move. A note that arrives mid switch can sit on either side. A copy keeps you safe.

Carrying mail across? The Univik Email Migration Tool moves each folder over an IMAP link. Give it imap.xs4all.nl with your xs4all.nl address and password on this side and the other account opposite.

Rather hand it off? Our Email Migration Services team runs the whole move and verifies each folder arrived.

Use These Settings in Univik Email Backup#

The same IMAP settings above let you download your complete XS4ALL mailbox to your computer. Univik Email Backup saves everything as PST, MBOX, EML or PDF files you keep forever, even if the account closes.

  1. Download Univik Email Backup and install it on Windows.
  2. Select XS4ALL from the source list. If XS4ALL is not listed, pick a plain IMAP account.
  3. Give the complete email address with your mailbox password. The login name is always the whole email address.
  4. When the backup tool wants server details, hand it imap.xs4all.nl on port 993 with SSL. Take those values straight from the IMAP table above, with port 993 over SSL.
  5. Pick a saving format and folder, then start the backup. Large mailboxes download in the background.
Why back up before switching providers: POP3 only grabs the inbox and vacation replies to a closed account bounce. A full IMAP backup keeps every folder, attachment and date stamp in files any email app can open later. Moving to a new account instead of archiving? Use the email migration tool to copy mail directly between accounts.

Email Settings Glossary#

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol. Reads mail that stays on the server, so all your devices see the same inbox, folders and read status.

POP3

Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to 1 device and can remove it from the server. Older method, still useful for local archives.

SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sends your outgoing mail. Every account needs it next to IMAP or POP3, which only receive.

SSL / TLS / STARTTLS

Encryption for the connection. SSL/TLS encrypts from the start (ports 993, 995, 465). STARTTLS upgrades a plain connection (port 587).

XS4ALL Password

Your XS4ALL email password, now linked to your KPN ID. It opens XS4ALL webmail and your email apps alike, since there is no separate app password.

imap.xs4all.nl

XS4ALL incoming mail host. Your IMAP client fetches mail from imap.xs4all.nl on 993 over SSL. imap.kpnmail.nl is the alternative.

smtp.xs4all.nl

XS4ALL outgoing mail host. Sending goes through smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL and an authenticated login. smtp.kpnmail.nl works too.

KPN ID

The single login KPN uses across its services. An xs4all.nl mailbox is now linked to a KPN ID, so you reset the password in your KPN account.

XS4ALL

A pioneering Dutch internet provider founded in 1993. KPN retired the brand in 2020 and now runs xs4all.nl mail on the KPN platform.

XS4ALL Webmail

The XS4ALL mailbox in a browser, at webmail.xs4all.nl. Sign in with your full xs4all.nl address and your password.

KPN Servers

The alternative hosts for a xs4all.nl address. imap.kpnmail.nl and smtp.kpnmail.nl reach the same mailbox as the XS4ALL servers.

xs4all.nl Alias

A xs4all.nl address also works as an alias on the KPN mailserver. Mail to it arrives whether you use the XS4ALL or KPN hosts.

XS4ALL Wind-Down

KPN is retiring XS4ALL services one at a time. Usenet and homepages.xs4all.nl have closed. Email is not part of it.

homepages.xs4all.nl

The old XS4ALL personal web space. It closed on 1 July 2026, with copies downloadable until 1 October 2026.

KPN Mailbox Alias

After you move to a KPN plan, your xs4all.nl address is an alias on a kpnmail.nl mailbox. You can often still send from the xs4all.nl address too.

How We Verify These Settings#

Univik builds email backup, migration and converter software since 2013. Our tools sign in to XS4ALL over IMAP and SMTP every day for thousands of users, so a changed server, port or login rule shows up in our connection logs before most guides notice it.

Every value on this page is confirmed with three checks: a live IMAP and SMTP connection from Univik Email Backup, a comparison against the XS4ALL and KPN support pages and a sign in with a real mailbox using the full address. We re verify after any provider announcement and at least once a quarter.

Found something that no longer matches what XS4ALL shows you? Tell us and we will retest and update the page, with the change logged in what changed recently.

 Help & Support

Frequently Asked Questions

XS4ALL mail uses imap.xs4all.nl on 993 for IMAP or pop.xs4all.nl on 995 for POP3, each over SSL. Sending is smtp.xs4all.nl on 465 with SSL and authentication. Sign in with your full xs4all.nl address and your XS4ALL password. The IMAP settings section holds the full table.

Check the username first. It must be the complete address rather than the part before the at sign. Use your full xs4all.nl address as the username and your XS4ALL email password, now linked to your KPN ID. There is no separate app password, so the same password opens webmail and sends from your app.

IMAP keeps mail on the server so every device matches. POP3 downloads it to one device and can lose it if that device fails. IMAP uses imap.xs4all.nl on 993 and POP3 uses pop.xs4all.nl on 995. Full comparison here.

Yes. The server, ports and encryption match on iPhone, Android and Windows. Only the path to the settings screen shifts by app, which the client setup guides spell out.

Yes. XS4ALL now runs on KPN, so your xs4all.nl address works on both sets of servers. Use imap.xs4all.nl with smtp.xs4all.nl. The KPN hosts imap.kpnmail.nl and smtp.kpnmail.nl work as well. The address and password stay the same.

Yes. Keep SSL on each server so your sign in never travels in the open. Your XS4ALL password is now linked to your KPN ID, which adds a layer to the account.

An email client with IMAP downloads mail as it syncs, but a dedicated backup tool is faster and saves standard files you can open anywhere. See how to back up your XS4ALL mailbox. If you already exported files in another format, an email converter changes them to PST, PDF or whatever your new app opens.

Since XS4ALL moved to KPN, two things trip people up. A KPN ID prompt can appear, so sign in once through your KPN ID and set the password again. If the XS4ALL servers refuse, switch to imap.kpnmail.nl and smtp.kpnmail.nl, which reach the same mailbox.

A migration tool copies mail across the two accounts on an IMAP link. Give the XS4ALL IMAP settings with your XS4ALL password on this side and the destination details on the other. Each folder lands with its dates intact.

If setting this up feels risky or you have many accounts to move, our managed email migration service does the entire job for you.

No. KPN is retiring XS4ALL one service at a time. Usenet and homepages.xs4all.nl have already closed, but email is not part of that. Your xs4all.nl address keeps working until you delete it. On a KPN subscription it becomes an alias on a KPN mailbox, so mail still arrives. Back up any homepages.xs4all.nl files before 1 October 2026. The section above covers it.
