Messaging Company Quick Settings

IMAP Server imap.themessagingco.com.au
IMAP Port 993 (SSL/TLS)
SMTP Server smtp.themessagingco.com.au
SMTP Port 465 (SSL)
POP3 Server pop.themessagingco.com.au
Username Your full email address

Quick answer: Incoming is imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993. For POP use pop.themessagingco.com.au on 995. Outgoing is smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465. Each connects over SSL. Sign in with your full address. If an app keeps asking for the password, you likely need an app-specific password. On an old iiNet or TPG server name? Switch to these. Set up as POP by mistake? Switch to IMAP.

Every setting on this page is verified with live IMAP and SMTP connections from Univik email software. We build email backup and converter tools since 2013, so we test against these servers every day. See what changed →

What Changed Recently#

A large group of Australian email addresses moved to The Messaging Company. Here is the current status and what your mail app needs now.

Worth knowing

Your email host moved, not your address. iiNet, Westnet, Internode, TPG, OzEmail and Adam mail now runs on The Messaging Company. Your address stays the same.

Worth knowing

Many apps now need an app-specific password. If your mail keeps asking for the password after the move, sign in to webmail and create an app-specific password for the app.

Worth knowing

New addresses are no longer issued. The old ISP brands stopped creating email addresses. An existing address keeps working, though new users are pointed elsewhere.

Current status: incoming is imap.themessagingco.com.au over SSL on 993, with pop.themessagingco.com.au on 995 for POP. Outgoing is smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465. The whole address is the login name.

Before You Begin#

Handle these two basics before anything else. Skip them and your email app will reject the connection even when every server value is correct.

1. An app-specific password

Sign in at webmail.themessagingco.com.au. Many setups need an app-specific password created there, not your webmail login password.

Where: webmail.themessagingco.com.au

2. The new server names

Read mail on imap.themessagingco.com.au and send on smtp.themessagingco.com.au. The old iiNet, TPG and Westnet server names no longer connect.

About The Messaging Company#

The Messaging Company is an Australian email provider, part of the Atmail group. It took over email hosting for a group of Australian internet brands.

The Messaging Company now hosts email for iiNet, Westnet, Internode, TPG, OzEmail and Adam after those brands stopped running email themselves. The point to remember is that every address uses the same servers, imap.themessagingco.com.au for reading and smtp.themessagingco.com.au for sending. You log in with the whole address.

Webmail Login#

You can always read your mail in a browser. The official sign in pages are:

Watch out for fake support pages. Many pages ranking for email settings show a phone number and ask you to call for "expert setup help". The Messaging Company and Univik never ask you to call a number to enter server settings. Everything you need is free on this page.

Find Your Settings#

IMAP is ready on a migrated mailbox. Reading uses imap.themessagingco.com.au and sending uses smtp.themessagingco.com.au. Here are the exact values.

  1. Open your email app and add or edit the account.
  2. Set incoming to imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993 with SSL.
  3. Set outgoing to smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465 with SSL.
  4. Use your full address as the username, with the app-specific password.
Still on an old iiNet or TPG server? If your app shows a host like mail.iinet.net.au or mail.tpg.com.au, change it. Reading uses imap.themessagingco.com.au and sending uses smtp.themessagingco.com.au.

IMAP Settings#

IMAP is the incoming choice The Messaging Company points most people to. Mail stays put on the server, so a laptop and a phone read one shared inbox. The incoming host is imap.themessagingco.com.au over 993.

POP Settings#

POP3 downloads mail to 1 device. Pick it only if you want a local copy on a single computer. Not sure? See the comparison below.

Careful with POP3 delete settings. Some clients remove mail from the server after download. Check "leave a copy on the server" if you still want mail in webmail.

SMTP Settings#

Stay on the secure ports: The Messaging Company lists 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP over SSL. Keep SSL set, since the plain ports send your login unencrypted.

SMTP handles outgoing mail. If you can read mail but not send it, the problem is here.

SMTP Serversmtp.themessagingco.com.au

Port (STARTTLS)587
EncryptionSSL on 465 or STARTTLS on 587

AuthenticationRequired. Turn on outgoing authentication with your full address and app-specific password.
Nothing sending? Put sending on 465 with SSL. Many home connections block port 25. The Messaging Company also accepts 587 with STARTTLS if 465 is blocked. Confirm outgoing authentication is on, with your full address.
Sending refused? Turn on outgoing authentication and use smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465 with SSL. The app-specific password works for sending too.

Check Your Settings Online#

You don't need to download anything to check these settings online. This page is the lookup: every value is verified, current and copyable straight from your browser. Not sure your address moved to The Messaging Company? Type it below to check in a moment.

Does my email address use these settings?

Runs in your browser only. Your address is never sent anywhere or stored.

Want to verify the account itself before configuring an app? Sign in at webmail.themessagingco.com.au, which confirms your address and password work, then create an app-specific password. With both in hand, any email app connects with the tables above.

Look Up IMAP Settings for Any Email Domain#

This page covers The Messaging Company. For every other address, work email on a company domain included, we run a free online lookup database: imapsettings.com.

imapsettings.com

Check IMAP settings online →

Enter any email address and get the incoming and outgoing server settings for that domain in 1 step:

Incoming server: hostname, port, SSL/TLS and username format
Outgoing server: SMTP hostname, port and encryption

Your address is used only to find the settings for that domain. Nothing is stored or shared.

Username and Password#

The username is your full address, such as one ending in iinet.net.au or tpg.com.au. For mail apps, many accounts need an app-specific password created in webmail, which is separate from your webmail login.

Username is the full address

Type your full address in, with the part after the at sign. A bare mailbox name is turned down.

Put that same address on both incoming and outgoing.

Password is the mailbox one

For mail apps, create an app-specific password in webmail.themessagingco.com.au, then paste that into the app. Your webmail login stays separate. Reset the password from the support centre if needed.

An app-specific password is separate from your webmail login, which keeps the app connection distinct.

Forgot the password? Sign in to webmail.themessagingco.com.au and create or refresh an app-specific password. Paste it into each app after that.

Set Up Your Mail in Email Clients#

The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:

Outlook (Windows and Mac)

  1. In Outlook select Add Account, then turn on manual setup under Advanced options.
  2. Choose IMAP and set incoming to imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993 with SSL.
  3. Set outgoing to smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465 with SSL.
  4. Enter the full address and mailbox password when Outlook prompts you.
  5. Send a test message to yourself to prove both paths.

Apple Mail (macOS)

  1. In Mail select Add Account, then pick Other Mail Account.
  2. Give your name, address and app-specific password, then continue.
  3. Enter imap.themessagingco.com.au for incoming and smtp.themessagingco.com.au for outgoing.
  4. Keep the SSL ports so nothing sends in plain text.
  5. Save and wait for the mailbox to load.

iPhone and iPad

  1. In Settings open Mail, then tap Mail Accounts and Add Account.
  2. Tap Other then Add Mail Account and fill your details.
  3. Keep IMAP chosen and put imap.themessagingco.com.au for incoming with smtp.themessagingco.com.au for outgoing.
  4. Leave the secure ports iOS fills, since the servers expect SSL.
  5. Tap Save and let iOS run its check.

Android

  1. Open your mail app and tap Add account, then Other or IMAP.
  2. Put in your address and password. Switch to manual setup if it stalls.
  3. For incoming use imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993 over SSL.
  4. For outgoing use smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465 over SSL.
  5. Save and swipe down to fetch your mail.

Thunderbird

  1. In Thunderbird pick Account Actions, then Add Mail Account.
  2. Type your name, address and app-specific password, then Continue.
  3. Wait for detection, then make sure IMAP with SSL is picked.
  4. If detection fails, type imap.themessagingco.com.au and smtp.themessagingco.com.au in yourself.
  5. Hit Done and the folders fill in on the first sync.

Webmail Settings#

Server settings connect your apps. These controls decide how the mailbox behaves on the server. They live in webmail at webmail.themessagingco.com.au, where you also create an app-specific password.

Signature

Add one in the webmail settings. It rides on mail sent from the browser. A desktop app keeps its own signature.

Vacation Auto Reply

Turn on an out of office reply in webmail. The server sends it, so it goes out even when your computer is off.

Filters and Folders

Build filters in webmail under settings. A server side rule sorts a message before any device downloads it. An in app rule only runs while that app is open.

Spam and Blocked Senders

The Messaging Company screens incoming mail for spam. Mark unwanted senders in webmail. Flagged mail lands in the junk folder for a look.

POP3 vs IMAP#

FeatureIMAPPOP3
Where mail livesOn The Messaging Company serverDownloaded to 1 device
Multiple devices✅ Everything stays in sync❌ Each device sees different mail
Sent and deleted mail✅ Synced everywhere⚠️ Stays only on that device
Offline reading⚠️ Cached mail only✅ Full local copy

Best forPhone + computer, everyday useSingle PC, local archives
Our verdict: pick IMAP unless you have a clear reason not to. For a permanent offline archive of your mailbox, a backup tool handles it better than plain POP.

Troubleshooting These Connections#

Find the exact error your email app shows, then apply the fix:

Error you seeWhat it meansFix
Username or password rejected Short username or wrong password Use your full address with an app-specific password from webmail, not your webmail login password.
Cannot send on port 25 ISP blocks the default SMTP port Set outgoing to smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465 with SSL. Port 587 with STARTTLS works if 465 is blocked.
App keeps asking for the password App-specific password needed Sign in to webmail.themessagingco.com.au and create an app-specific password. Paste that into the app, not your webmail login password.
Old iiNet or TPG server will not connect Email host moved The old ISP mail servers are retired. Set incoming to imap.themessagingco.com.au and outgoing to smtp.themessagingco.com.au.
Cannot connect to server Wrong port or encryption Set 993 with SSL incoming and 465 with SSL outgoing. A firewall on your own machine can block it as well.
Repeated password prompt Short username or a typo Clear the saved login, then put in the full address with the mailbox password.
Messages stuck in Outbox SMTP authentication is off Enable "outgoing server requires authentication" with the same login as incoming mail.
Old emails missing after the move Account set up as POP POP can pull mail off the server onto one device. Check that device for a local archive or PST file. Then set up IMAP on imap.themessagingco.com.au so future mail stays on the server.
Account will not verify after changing POP to IMAP A POP account cannot switch in place A POP account fails when pointed at the IMAP server. Do not edit it. Add a new IMAP account on imap.themessagingco.com.au 993 with SSL, then move your mail across.

Reader Reported Fixes

Create the app-specific password first. The most common failure after the move is an app rejecting the webmail password. Sign in to webmail and create an app-specific password. Paste that into the app, which clears most trouble.

Test the login in webmail first. Sign in at webmail.themessagingco.com.au with your address and password. If webmail opens, the account is fine and the issue is the app settings or the app-specific password.

Switching from POP to IMAP #

After the move, some accounts were set up as POP by mistake. On a phone, the automatic setup sometimes picked POP with an old host like pop.ozemail.com.au instead of IMAP on imap.themessagingco.com.au. POP pulls mail down to one device and can take it off the server. That is why some people found older mail and folders missing after the switch.

The Messaging Company recommends IMAP, which keeps mail on the server so every device stays in step. You cannot turn a POP account into an IMAP one in place. The account was built for POP, so editing the server names makes it fail to connect. The safe route is to add a fresh IMAP account and move your mail into it.

Back up first, since POP often removes mail from the server as it downloads. In webmail, check which messages you have, then export your mail to a file. Add a new account using imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993 with SSL. Import the backed up mail into it. Only once everything shows up should you remove the old POP account.

Moving Mail In or Out?#

The mail speaks plain IMAP, so a mailbox moves in or out like any standard account. Each folder stays on the server until the copy finishes.

Take a copy first. Back up the mailbox before a move. A note that arrives mid switch can sit on either side. A copy keeps you safe.

Carrying mail across? The Univik Email Migration Tool moves each folder over an IMAP link. Give it imap.themessagingco.com.au with your address and app-specific password on this side and the other account opposite.

Rather hand it off? Our Email Migration Services team runs the whole move and verifies each folder arrived.

Use These Settings in Univik Email Backup#

The same IMAP settings above let you download your complete mailbox to your computer. Univik Email Backup saves everything as PST, MBOX, EML or PDF files you keep forever, even if the account closes.

  1. Download Univik Email Backup and install it on Windows.
  2. Select a plain IMAP account from the source list. The Messaging Company is rarely listed by name.
  3. Give the complete email address with your mailbox password. The login name is always the whole email address.
  4. When the backup tool wants server details, hand it imap.themessagingco.com.au on port 993 with SSL. Take those values straight from the IMAP table above, with port 993 over SSL.
  5. Pick a saving format and folder, then start the backup. Large mailboxes download in the background.
Why back up before switching providers: POP3 only grabs the inbox and vacation replies to a closed account bounce. A full IMAP backup keeps every folder, attachment and date stamp in files any email app can open later. Moving to a new account instead of archiving? Use the email migration tool to copy mail directly between accounts.

Email Settings Glossary#

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol. Reads mail that stays on the server, so all your devices see the same inbox, folders and read status.

POP3

Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to 1 device and can remove it from the server. Older method, still useful for local archives.

SMTP

The protocol for sending mail. The outgoing host is smtp.themessagingco.com.au on port 465 with SSL or 587 with STARTTLS. Sign in with your full address and app-specific password.

SSL and STARTTLS

The encryption used here. Incoming runs over SSL on 993 or 995. Outgoing runs over SSL on 465 or STARTTLS on 587.

App-Specific Password

A separate password for mail apps, created in webmail.themessagingco.com.au. It is not your webmail login password. Many setups need one after the move.

imap.themessagingco.com.au

The incoming server for reading mail. IMAP runs on 993 over SSL. It replaced the old iiNet, TPG and Westnet server names.

smtp.themessagingco.com.au

The outgoing server for sending mail. SMTP runs on 465 with SSL or 587 with STARTTLS. Authentication is on with your full address.

webmail.themessagingco.com.au

The browser inbox for a migrated address. You sign in with your address and password. You create an app-specific password here.

The Atmail Group

The Australian email company The Messaging Company is part of. It runs the mail platform behind the migrated brands.

The Migration

iiNet, Westnet, Internode, TPG, OzEmail and Adam email moved to The Messaging Company. Addresses stayed the same, while the servers changed.

The Messaging Company

An Australian email provider that now hosts email for several former ISP brands. Its servers use the themessagingco.com.au names.

pop.themessagingco.com.au

The POP incoming server, on 995 over SSL. The Messaging Company recommends IMAP instead, since POP can remove mail from the server.

Leave Mail on the Server

A POP option that keeps a copy on the server after download. With it off, POP removes mail as it pulls it down, which is how history goes missing.

Mailbox Backup

A saved copy of your mail, often a PST or MBOX file. Make one before switching from POP, since POP can leave the server without a full copy.

In-Place Switch

Changing a POP account to IMAP by editing its servers. It does not work here, since the account fails to verify. Add a new IMAP account instead.

How We Verify These Settings#

Univik builds email backup, migration and converter software since 2013. Our tools sign in to The Messaging Company over IMAP and SMTP every day for thousands of users, so a changed server, port or login rule shows up in our connection logs before most guides notice it.

Every value on this page is confirmed with three checks: a live IMAP and SMTP connection from Univik Email Backup, a comparison against The Messaging Company guides and a sign in with a real mailbox using the full address. We re verify after any provider announcement and at least once a quarter.

Found something that no longer matches what The Messaging Company shows you? Tell us and we will retest and update the page, with the change logged in what changed recently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Incoming is imap.themessagingco.com.au on port 993 with SSL. For POP use pop.themessagingco.com.au on 995. Outgoing is smtp.themessagingco.com.au on port 465 with SSL. Sign in with your full address and an app-specific password.

Email for iiNet, Westnet, Internode, TPG, OzEmail and Adam moved to The Messaging Company. Your address is the same, but the servers changed. Set incoming to imap.themessagingco.com.au and outgoing to smtp.themessagingco.com.au, then sign in with an app-specific password.

IMAP on imap.themessagingco.com.au keeps your mail on the server, so a phone and a laptop share one inbox. The Messaging Company recommends IMAP. POP on pop.themessagingco.com.au downloads mail to one device and can remove the server copy, which limits support if you lose the data.

Yes. Every device uses imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993 for incoming and smtp.themessagingco.com.au on 465 for outgoing, with your full address and app-specific password. Only the menus differ.

Mail apps often need an app-specific password, not your webmail login password. Sign in at webmail.themessagingco.com.au and create an app-specific password. Paste that into the app. This is the step most people miss after the move.

Yes. The servers use SSL on 993 and 995 for reading with SSL on 465 for sending, so your login and mail travel encrypted. Keep encryption on and avoid the plain ports 143, 110 and 25, which send your login in the clear.

Point a backup tool at imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993 with SSL, using your full address and app-specific password. Let it copy every folder. The backup section walks through it. It keeps a local archive without removing mail from the server.

No. The old ISP brands stopped issuing new email addresses, so the service is for existing accounts only. An existing address keeps working with the settings above. For a new address, most people move to Gmail or Outlook.

Add your address to the new account as an IMAP source with imap.themessagingco.com.au on 993. A migration tool that copies folder by folder works too. Both keep the mail on the server until the copy finishes.

If your account was set up as POP, it downloaded mail onto one device and often took the server copy with it. Check that device for a local archive or PST file. To keep mail on the server from now on, back up first, then add a new IMAP account on imap.themessagingco.com.au with 993 and SSL. Do not edit the POP account, since it will not switch in place. The section above walks through it.
