BUSY moves Marg data through a vendor tool called Marg2BUSY, which requires BUSY 21 at Release 11.6 or above and a script executed in Marg.
It carries ledgers, groups, items and sale, purchase and journal vouchers. The other route is Excel, since BUSY cannot import JSON. Load into a new company and test a small slice first.
There is more than one way in from Marg, and each has a catch. One needs Marg to run. Another needs a spreadsheet laid out the way the target expects. Knowing the catches before you start saves you a weekend, which is roughly what a first attempt costs when the order is wrong.
Who Needs a Marg to BUSY Data Transfer?
Which of these sounds like your case? Each card jumps to the matching part.
You can run a script in the old program and your copy meets the release the vendor names.
Compare the routes →You need the sequence from a backup to a checked BUSY company.
Follow the steps →The old PC is gone or the files are damaged, so nothing can run inside Marg any more and the only thing you hold is a copy of the Data folder.
Use the Data folder →Switching programs is a decision about the next ten years of books, while the load itself is a weekend job if the order is right. This guide sets out the routes the vendor documents and the checks that tell you the new company ties to the old one.
Which Route Moves Marg Data to BUSY?
| Point | Marg2BUSY | Excel import | From the Data folder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marg must run | Yes | Yes, to make the sheets | No |
| Needs a script inside | Yes | No | No |
| Release needed | 21 Release 11.6 or higher | Any with Excel import | Any with Excel import |
| Masters and vouchers apart | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Demo limit | 100 vouchers in the demo | Same demo limit | Same demo limit |
The vendor Marg2BUSY page says the tool transfers ledgers, groups and items, plus sale, purchase and journal vouchers. It names Marg ERP 9 as compatible, and it cautions against a date-range migration and against loading into an existing company. Both cautions are worth taking at face value.
Limitations of Marg2BUSY: it needs Marg running on a PC you control, BUSY 21 at Release 11.6 or above and a script typed into Marg exactly as the vendor gives it.
Which route should you choose? If Marg still runs and the release matches, use Marg2BUSY. If Marg is gone or the files are damaged, go through Excel. If you only need opening balances, type them and keep the old books for reference.
On the old side the setup sits under Masters, Marg Setups, Advance Features and Self-Designed Reports. The vendor gives the exact entries to type there, so copy them from its page and not from a forum post, because one wrong character in that script and the export writes nothing useful.
How to Move a Marg Company into BUSY Step by Step
The sequence below holds for every route. Only the fourth step changes.
- Back up the Marg dataClose the program on every PC and copy the whole folder to a second drive. A backup also covers a failed transfer.
- Create a new companyMake an empty company for the move. The vendor advises against loading into one that already holds entries.
- Choose the routeRun Marg2BUSY if the old program opens and the release is right. Use an Excel set if it is old, damaged or gone.
- Map and transferIn Marg2BUSY, map the groups and choose the company and the year. In the Excel route, map the sheet columns once.
- Load masters before vouchersBring in ledgers, groups and items first. Then bring in the vouchers.
- Verify against the old booksCompare trial balance totals and a few bills. Fix mapping faults on a copy and run the load again.
Note: the vendor tells you to test a small transfer before a full one. Take one month of vouchers into a throwaway company and compare totals. Only then run the full year.

How Does the BUSY Excel Import Work?
The FAQ on other software says data from other programs comes in through Excel in .xls, .xlsx or CSV form and that JSON cannot be imported, and its Excel import answer gives the path.
| Stage | In BUSY | What to set |
|---|---|---|
| Open | Administration, then Data Export Import | Pick masters or vouchers |
| Masters | Import Master from MS Excel | File path, rows and sheet number |
| Vouchers | Import Vouchers from Excel | Click Configure and map the columns |
| Run | Import | Starting row, ending row and sheet |
The page does not say which of masters and vouchers goes first. Our advice is masters first, and we mark that as ours. An Excel set where accounts and items lead and each voucher type has its own sheet fits the layout well.
Univik Marg Data Converter puts accounts and items first and gives each voucher type its own sheet.
The accounts sheet comes from a reader where ledger balance equalled opening plus debit minus credit in 100% of ledgers across 3 real companies and 44 table files. Map those into BUSY and the opening balances should tie on the first try.

Fix Common Marg to BUSY Transfer Problems
Do this: Check the release first. The vendor names 21 Release 11.6 or higher. Then check that the script entries match the BUSY page letter for letter.
Do this: Batch details need the batch feature switched on. Turn it on in the new company and load the vouchers again.
Do this: That is the limit of the demo, not a fault in the data. A licensed copy removes it.
Do this: It cannot import JSON. Use an Excel or CSV file instead.
