To move Marg data to TallyPrime, export masters and transactions as XML, then import the masters first and the vouchers second.
Marg Care documents an export inside Marg that writes Master.xml and Daybook.xml. A converter can write the same kind of files from the Data folder. Compare the Profit and Loss account afterwards.
A change of accounting program is a one-way door for most firms. The old books must be read in full and the new ones must tie back to them, or the first audit after the move becomes a long one. Two routes lead into Tally, and they differ mainly in whether Marg has to be running.
Who Needs a Marg to Tally Data Transfer?
Which fits your move? Each card jumps to the part you need.
You can reach the Utilities menu and want the vendor route, with its prerequisites listed.
See the two routes →You need the sequence from a copy of the folder to a checked company in Tally.
Follow the steps →The import ran, but Tally reports ledgers or stock items as missing and you need to know which step to repeat.
Fix the errors →Moving a company between two accounting programs fails in small ways: a master is missing, a return voucher has no ledger, a date range stops short. This guide lays out both routes and the checks that catch those faults before you rely on the new books.
Which Route Moves Marg Data to Tally?
There are two. The first is the one Marg Care documents and it runs inside the program, while the second reads the Data folder from outside and needs no Marg at all.
Which route should you choose? If Marg runs on every node and you can meet the prerequisites below, use the vendor export. If Marg is gone, the licence is no longer valid or the files are damaged, write the XML from the Data folder. The Tally import side is the same either way.
| Point | Marg export to Tally | Convert from the Data folder |
|---|---|---|
| Needs Marg to open | Yes | No |
| Needs a Tally patch | Yes, per Marg Care | No |
| Needs export rights | Yes, in Control Room Setup | No |
| Output | Master.xml and Daybook.xml | Tally XML with masters first |
| Date range | Chosen before Proceed | Chosen before the run |
| Best when | Marg is healthy and licensed | Marg is old, damaged or removed |
Marg Care's export article lists the prerequisites: close Marg on all nodes, update the Tally patch, use licensed TallyPrime and enable Export Power in Control Room Setup and for the user. Miss one and the export menu stays grey.
On the Marg side the export has three parts. Choose Export Marg to Tally and tick Masters and Transactions, add Include Inventory if stock is involved, then browse to a place for each file and enter the date range.
Limitations of the vendor route: Marg must run, every node must be closed and the two return ledgers need a manual step that is easy to skip.
How to Move a Marg Company into Tally Step by Step
These steps work for either route. Only the second step differs.
- Copy the Marg folder and close MargShut the program down on every PC and keep a copy of the install folder on another drive.
- Pick a routeUse Marg's own export when Marg opens and its Tally patch is current. Use a converter on the Data folder when Marg is old, damaged or gone.
- Create the company in TallyMake a new company with the financial year and the features the books used, such as inventory.
- Import the mastersIn Tally, open Import, choose Masters and give the path of the master file. Set the behaviour to modify with new data and take the backup Tally offers.
- Import the vouchersOpen Import, choose Transactions and give the day book file. Import only after the masters are in.
- Compare the Profit and Loss accountOpen the account in Marg and in Tally for the same dates. Check the Chart of Accounts and the Day Book too.
Note: the vendor asks you to select only the Sales Return and Purchase Return ledgers in that step, because the target program lacks these two ledgers. Leave it out and return vouchers may arrive without a ledger to sit in, and you will find out from the Exceptions report rather than from a clean import.

How Does Tally Import the XML Files?
The import screens are the same for both routes. The vendor help page gives them as follows.
| Stage | In Tally | Before you press Enter |
|---|---|---|
| Masters | Alt+O, then Masters | Give the path and set Import Behaviour |
| Back up | Choose Yes when asked | Takes a copy of the company data |
| Vouchers | Alt+O, then Transactions | Masters must already exist |
| Check | Chart of Accounts and Day Book | Compare counts with the old books |
The help page also asks you to enable the same company features that were on when the data was exported. XML import works in all TallyPrime releases, while Excel arrived in release 4.0 and JSON in 7.0. For the wider picture read getting started with importing data.
Univik Marg Data Converter writes the masters file first and the vouchers after it, with a short import note.
Before the XML goes anywhere near Tally, the reader behind it has already tied the books: ledger debit and credit equalled the month postings in 100% of ledgers and group totals matched in 100% of groups, measured on 3 real Marg ERP 9+ companies.

Fix Common Marg to Tally Import Errors
Do this: The voucher names a ledger that Tally does not hold. Import the masters again, then the vouchers. Tally lists the gaps in the Exceptions report; see Tally's import FAQ.
Do this: Inventory was left out of the export. Run the export again with Include Inventory ticked and enable inventory in the Tally company.
Do this: Check the folder chosen for each file and the dates. A range with no vouchers writes nothing for the day book.
Do this: Repeat the Voucher Definition step and pick only Sales Return and Purchase Return, as Marg Care directs.
