About DNA Mail#
DNA is one of Finland three large telecoms, alongside Elisa and Telia. It runs the DNA email service and absorbed the Welho cable brand.
DNA is a Finnish operator that took over the Welho cable network and its email. The point to remember is that DNA now uses two server names, mail.dnamail.fi for reading and smtp.dnamail.fi for sending. You log in with the whole address and your DNA mailbox password.

Username and Password#
The username is your full DNA address, such as one ending in dnainternet.net or welho.com. The password is your DNA mailbox password, reset in webmail.dna.fi. There is no separate app password.
Username is the full address
Type your full address in, with the part after the at sign. A bare mailbox name is turned down.
Put that same address on both incoming and outgoing.
Password is the mailbox one
This is your DNA mailbox password, reset at webmail.dna.fi. After a reset, DNA asks for a fresh strong authentication. Update every app with the new password.
The strong authentication DNA asks after a password reset guards the account, not each app connection.
Set Up DNA in Email Clients#
The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:
Outlook (Windows and Mac)
- In Outlook select Add Account, then turn on manual setup under Advanced options.
- Choose IMAP and set incoming to
mail.dnamail.fion 993 with SSL. - Set outgoing to
smtp.dnamail.fion 465 with SSL. - Enter the full address and mailbox password when Outlook prompts you.
- Send a test message to yourself to prove both paths.
Apple Mail (macOS)
- In Mail select Add Account, then pick Other Mail Account.
- Give your name, DNA address and password, then continue.
- Enter mail.dnamail.fi for incoming and smtp.dnamail.fi for outgoing.
- Keep the SSL ports so nothing sends in plain text.
- Save and wait for the mailbox to load.
iPhone and iPad
- In Settings open Mail, then tap Mail Accounts and Add Account.
- Tap Other then Add Mail Account and fill your details.
- Keep IMAP chosen and put mail.dnamail.fi for incoming with smtp.dnamail.fi for outgoing.
- Leave the secure ports iOS fills, since DNA expects SSL.
- Tap Save and let iOS run its check.
Android
- Open your mail app and tap Add account, then Other or IMAP.
- Put in your address and password. Switch to manual setup if it stalls.
- For incoming use mail.dnamail.fi on 993 over SSL.
- For outgoing use smtp.dnamail.fi on 465 over SSL.
- Save and swipe down to fetch your mail.
Thunderbird
- In Thunderbird pick Account Actions, then Add Mail Account.
- Type your name, DNA address and password, then Continue.
- Wait for detection, then make sure IMAP with SSL is picked.
- If detection fails, type mail.dnamail.fi and smtp.dnamail.fi in yourself.
- Hit Done and the folders fill in on the first sync.
DNA Webmail Settings#
Server settings connect your apps. These controls decide how the mailbox behaves on the server. They live in DNA webmail at webmail.dna.fi, where you sign in with your address and password.
Signature
Add one in the webmail.dna.fi settings under Identities. It rides on mail sent from the browser. A desktop app keeps its own signature.
Vacation Auto Reply
Turn on the holiday reply in webmail.dna.fi under Settings. The server sends it, so it goes out even when your computer is off.
Filters and Folders
Build filters in webmail.dna.fi under Settings. A server side rule sorts a message before any device downloads it. An in app rule only runs while that app is open.
Spam and Blocked Senders
DNA screens incoming mail for spam. Mark unwanted senders in webmail.dna.fi. Flagged mail lands in the junk folder for a look.

Troubleshooting DNA Connections#
Find the exact error your email app shows, then apply the fix:

Reader Reported Fixes
Use the recommended names first. The most common DNA failure is an app still pointing at an old welho.com or dnainternet.net server. Those work, though setting mail.dnamail.fi for incoming and smtp.dnamail.fi for outgoing clears most trouble.
Test the login in webmail first. Sign in at webmail.dna.fi with your address and password. If webmail opens, the credentials are right and the issue is the app settings.
What DNA Mail Leaves Out #
DNA Mail keeps to the basics, so a couple of features you would expect are not there. It has no message forwarding, so you cannot auto-send a copy of incoming mail to another address from the server. It also has no calendar. For either one, a full mailbox service like Gmail or Outlook does more.
Sending has limits that guard the server against spam. One account can send up to 100 messages an hour. A single message can reach up to 100 recipients. Going over either cap pauses your sending for a while, so a large mailout is better split up or handled by a dedicated service.
The address you send from has to be your own DNA address, though a reply can still point somewhere else. The mailbox holds 1 GB. One message with its attachments can reach 25 MB. You can set up to six aliases. Any extra aliases from before the 2024 change keep working, so you only lose the room to add new ones until you drop back under six.

Moving Mail In or Out?#
DNA mail speaks plain IMAP, so a mailbox moves in or out like any standard account. Each folder stays on the server until the copy finishes.
Take a copy first. Back up the mailbox before a move. A note that arrives mid switch can sit on either side. A copy keeps you safe.

IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. Reads mail that stays on the server, so all your devices see the same inbox, folders and read status.
POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to 1 device and can remove it from the server. Older method, still useful for local archives.
SMTP
The protocol for sending mail. On DNA the outgoing host is smtp.dnamail.fi on port 465 with SSL or 587 with STARTTLS. Authentication is on with your full address.
SSL and STARTTLS
The encryption DNA uses. Incoming runs over SSL on 993 or 995. Outgoing runs over SSL on 465 or STARTTLS on 587.
DNA Mailbox Password
The password for your DNA mailbox. You reset it in webmail.dna.fi. A new strong authentication is asked afterwards.
