What Changed Recently#
A host changes how you sign in more often than it changes the server names. Here is the current status for Freemail and what it means for your setup.

Handle these two basics before anything else. Skip them and your email app will reject the connection even when every server value is correct.

Add the address under your mail settings in Freemail and set its password. That password is the one your apps use.

About Freemail.hu#
Freemail.hu is a long-running Hungarian free web portal. A personal address ends in freemail.hu and reads in Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird. What a client can do depends on whether the account is on the old or the new web interface.
A new-interface account reads over IMAP on imap.freemail.hu and sends on smtp.freemail.hu with STARTTLS. An old-interface account reads over POP3 on pop3.freemail.hu. For sending it uses your internet provider's outgoing server rather than a Freemail one.

Old Freemail Accounts Send Through Your Provider#
Freemail comes in two account styles. The style decides what a mail program can do. A new web-interface account gets IMAP and a Freemail outgoing server. An old web-interface account reads over POP3 only. It has no Freemail outgoing server at all, so it has to send through your internet provider.

Username and Password#
Both come from the mailbox itself. The username is the whole email address and the password is the one you chose when you built the address in Freemail. A standard Freemail mailbox uses no Freemail password.
Username is the full address
Type you@freemail.hu in full, with the part after the at sign. Freemail turns down a bare mailbox name.
Put that same address on both incoming and outgoing.
Password is the mailbox one
This is the webmail password you set under your mail settings in Freemail, not your Freemail client area login. Reset it there if an app keeps refusing it.
The two factor prompt in the Freemail client area guards billing, not the mailbox connection.
Set Up Freemail in Email Clients#
The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:
Outlook (Windows and Mac)
- In Outlook select Add Account, then turn on manual setup under Advanced options.
- Choose IMAP and set incoming to
imap.freemail.huon 993 with SSL. - Set outgoing to the same server on 587 with SSL.
- Enter the full address and mailbox password when Outlook prompts you.
- Send a test message to yourself to prove both paths.
Apple Mail (macOS)
- In Mail select Add Account, then pick Other Mail Account.
- Give your name, Freemail address and password, then continue.
- Enter imap.freemail.hu with SSL on incoming and outgoing.
- Keep the SSL ports so nothing sends in plain text.
- Save and wait for the mailbox to load.
iPhone and iPad
- In Settings open Mail, then tap Mail Accounts and Add Account.
- Tap Other then Add Mail Account and fill your details.
- Keep IMAP chosen and put imap.freemail.hu in both server boxes.
- Leave the secure ports iOS fills, since Freemail expects SSL.
- Tap Save and let iOS run its check.
Android
- Open your mail app and tap Add account, then Other or IMAP.
- Put in your address and password. Switch to manual setup if it stalls.
- For incoming use imap.freemail.hu on 993 over SSL.
- For outgoing use smtp.freemail.hu on 587 over SSL.
- Save and swipe down to fetch your mail.
Thunderbird
- In Thunderbird pick Account Actions, then Add Mail Account.
- Type your name, Freemail address and password, then Continue.
- Wait for detection, then make sure IMAP with SSL is picked.
- If detection fails, type imap.freemail.hu in yourself.
- Hit Done and the folders fill in on the first sync.
Freemail Webmail Settings#
Server settings connect your apps. The controls here shape how the mailbox acts on its own. They live in Freemail webmail at freemail.hu, opened in any browser.
Signature
Add one in the webmail preferences. It rides on mail sent from webmail. A desktop app keeps a signature of its own.
Vacation Auto Reply
Set an autoresponder in Freemail and give it start and end dates. The Freemail server delivers it, so it fires even when your machine is off.
Filters and Folders
Create filters from the Freemail webmail filters in Freemail. A server side rule sorts a message ahead of any device fetching it. A rule set inside an app only works while that app is running.
Spam and Blocked Senders
Freemail runs SpamAssassin on incoming mail. Set the threshold and block unwanted senders in Freemail. Flagged mail lands in the junk folder for a look.

Troubleshooting Freemail Connections#
Find the exact error your email app shows, then apply the fix:

Reader Reported Fixes
Copy from the old and new split. When a manual setup will not connect, the the old and new split page in Freemail prints the exact server name and ports for that mailbox. Pasting those in clears the guesswork behind most failed setups.
Test the login in webmail first. Sign in at webimap.freemail.hu with the full address and mailbox password. If webmail works, the credentials are right and the issue sits in the app settings.
Set Up Recovery Before You Are Locked Out#
Freemail can only get you back into a locked account through details you set up ahead of time. If a forgotten password meets an account with none of them in place, there is no way back and the whole mailbox is lost, so this is worth doing the day you read it.
There are three routes. Each rests on something you had to set earlier. If the account forwards to another address or has POP3 download switched on, you can send a password-change request into your own mailbox. If you set a password-reminder security question, answering it correctly lets you set a new password at once. If you added a secondary email, Freemail sends a reminder link there. The same secondary email is where a 90-day inactivity deletion warning goes, so it earns its place twice. Set any of these now from the webmail, under Settings then Security, rather than waiting until you are shut out.

Moving Mail In or Out?#
Freemail mail speaks plain IMAP, so a mailbox moves in or out like any Freemail account. Each folder stays on the server until the move finishes.
Take a copy first. Back up the mailbox before a move. A note that arrives mid switch can sit on either side. A copy keeps you safe.

IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. Keeps mail on the server so every device stays in sync. Freemail offers it on the new web interface, at imap.freemail.hu on 993 with SSL.
POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to one device. Use pop3.freemail.hu on 995 with SSL. Tick leave a copy on the server.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sends your outgoing mail. New accounts send on smtp.freemail.hu on 587 with STARTTLS. Old accounts send through their internet provider.
New Web Interface
The current Freemail account style. It gives IMAP on imap.freemail.hu and an outgoing server on smtp.freemail.hu, so a client sends without your provider.
Old Web Interface
The older Freemail account style. It reads over POP3 only with no Freemail outgoing server, so sending goes through your internet provider.
Your Provider's SMTP
The outgoing server an old Freemail account has to use. It belongs to your internet provider, such as smtp for your home broadband, not to Freemail.
STARTTLS
The way Freemail secures the outgoing port. Set the outgoing server to 587 with STARTTLS, so the connection upgrades to an encrypted one.
SSL
The encryption for incoming mail. Turn SSL on, then set 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP, so the incoming connection stays private.
Full Email Address
Your username is the whole address, such as you@freemail.hu. Type it in full on the incoming and the outgoing server.
Leave a Copy on the Server
A POP setting to keep messages in webmail. It is off by default, so turn it on or POP will clear mail from the Freemail web view.

The browser view at freemail.hu, where you read mail, set filters and manage the recovery details for the account.

Start the reset from the login page. Freemail checks the recovery details you set up before, such as an alternative address or a security question, then lets you set a new password.
Set a recovery method in advance, because Freemail can only reset through one you already have. In webmail go to Settings then Security and add a secondary email plus a security question. You can also switch on forwarding or POP3. With none of these, a lost password means the mailbox cannot be recovered.
