What Changed Recently#
Gandi changed its email plan more than its server names. Here is where Gandi Mail stands today and what it means for your setup.

Free email ended on 30 November 2023. The mailbox that used to come with a Gandi domain is now a paid Gandi Mailbox. Standard gives 10 GB and Premium gives 50 GB. The server settings did not change.

Your mailbox now expires on its own date. A Gandi Mailbox renews separately from the domain, so the two dates can differ. If mail stops, check that the mailbox itself is still paid up.

A forward is free but cannot send. Gandi still forwards mail for free, yet a forward has no outbox. To send through mail.gandi.net you need a paid mailbox, not a forward on its own.

Handle these two basics before anything else. Skip them and your email app will reject the connection even when every server value is correct.
1. Create the mailbox
In your Gandi account open the Mailboxes area for your domain and add a paid mailbox with a password. A forward will not work here, since only a mailbox can send.

About Gandi Mail#
Gandi is a French domain registrar founded in 1999 and based in Paris. Gandi Mail runs on its own server rather than a per domain host. Mail now needs a paid Gandi Mailbox.

Find Your Settings#
A Gandi mailbox has IMAP on from the first day, so there is nothing to switch on. To confirm the values for one address, open your Gandi account.
- Sign in to your Gandi account at admin.gandi.net.
- Open your domain then the Mailboxes area.
- Create or pick a mailbox and set its password.
- Use mail.gandi.net over SSL for incoming and outgoing in your app.

IMAP is the incoming choice Gandi points most people to. Mail stays on the server, so SOGo, Roundcube and your phone read one shared inbox. Gandi runs IMAP on mail.gandi.net over 993.

Username and Password#
Both come from the mailbox itself. The username is the whole email address and the password is the one you set for that mailbox in your Gandi account. A Gandi mailbox uses no app password.
Username is the full address
Type you@yourdomain.com in full, with the part after the at sign. Gandi turns down a bare mailbox name.
Put the same Gandi address on both incoming and outgoing.
Password is the mailbox one
This is the mailbox password you set in your Gandi account under Mailboxes, not your Gandi account sign in. Reset it there if an app keeps refusing it.
The two factor prompt on your Gandi account guards the account. SOGo and Roundcube can each add their own webmail 2FA.
Set Up Gandi in Email Clients#
The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:
Outlook (Windows and Mac)
- In Outlook select Add Account, then turn on manual setup under Advanced options.
- Choose IMAP and set incoming to
mail.gandi.neton 993 with SSL. - Set outgoing to the same
mail.gandi.neton 465 with SSL. - Enter the full address and mailbox password when Outlook prompts you.
- Send a test message to yourself to prove both paths.
Apple Mail (macOS)
- In Mail select Add Account, then pick Other Mail Account.
- Give your name, Gandi address and password, then continue.
- Enter mail.gandi.net with SSL on incoming and outgoing.
- Keep the SSL ports so nothing sends in plain text.
- Save and wait for the mailbox to load.
iPhone and iPad
- In Settings open Mail, then tap Mail Accounts and Add Account.
- Tap Other then Add Mail Account and fill your details.
- Keep IMAP chosen and put mail.gandi.net in both server boxes.
- Leave the secure ports iOS fills, since Gandi expects SSL.
- Tap Save and let iOS run its check.
Android
- Open your mail app and tap Add account, then Other or IMAP.
- Put in your address and password. Switch to manual setup if it stalls.
- For incoming use mail.gandi.net on 993 over SSL.
- For outgoing use mail.gandi.net on 465 over SSL.
- Save and swipe down to fetch your mail.
Thunderbird
- In Thunderbird pick Account Actions, then Add Mail Account.
- Type your name, Gandi address and password, then Continue.
- Wait for detection, then make sure IMAP with SSL is picked.
- If detection fails, type mail.gandi.net for incoming and outgoing.
- Hit Done and the folders fill in on the first sync.
Gandi Webmail Settings#
Server settings connect your apps. These controls decide how the mailbox behaves on the server. They live in Gandi webmail at webmail.gandi.net, where Gandi gives two apps, SOGo and Roundcube.
Signature
Add one in SOGo or Roundcube preferences. The signature rides on messages sent from webmail. A desktop app keeps its own.
Vacation Auto Reply
Set an out of office reply in SOGo and give it start and end dates. The Gandi server sends it, so it fires even when your machine is off.
Filters and Folders
Gandi filters use Sieve rules on the server. A Sieve rule sorts a message ahead of any device fetching it. A rule set inside an app only works while that app is open.
Spam and Blocked Senders
Gandi filters incoming mail for spam. Tune rules and blocked senders in SOGo or Roundcube. Flagged mail lands in the junk folder for a look.

Gandi Sending and Storage Limits#
A few limits are worth knowing before you bulk forward or move a mailbox. Gandi Mail is a paid plan with set storage and a few rules:

Troubleshooting Gandi Connections#
Find the exact error your email app shows, then apply the fix:

Use the one host. When a manual setup will not connect, enter mail.gandi.net for incoming and outgoing, on 993 and 465 with SSL. That single server clears the guesswork behind most failed setups.

Gandi Mail speaks plain IMAP, so a mailbox moves in or out like any standard account. Each folder stays on the server until the copy finishes.
Take a copy first. Back up the mailbox before a move. During a Gandi move a message can land on either provider until the copy ends. A copy keeps you safe.

IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. Reads mail that stays on the server, so all your devices see the same inbox, folders and read status.
POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to 1 device and can remove it from the server. Older method, still useful for local archives.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sends your outgoing mail. Every account needs it next to IMAP or POP3, which only receive.
SSL / TLS / STARTTLS
Encryption for the connection. SSL/TLS encrypts from the start (ports 993, 995, 465). STARTTLS upgrades a plain connection (port 587).
Mailbox Password
The password you set for a Gandi mailbox in your Gandi account. Your email apps use this, not your Gandi sign in.
Gandi Mailbox
The paid mailbox Gandi sells on top of a domain. Standard gives 10 GB and Premium gives 50 GB.
SOGo
One of the two Gandi webmail apps at webmail.gandi.net. It adds calendar and contacts alongside mail.
Roundcube
