1. Use the subdomained hosts

The servers are imap.vivaldi.net, pop3.vivaldi.net and smtp.vivaldi.net. The POP3 host has a 3 in it. A plain pop.vivaldi.net does not exist.

Vivaldi is a free privacy focused email service from Vivaldi Technologies, the Norwegian company behind the Vivaldi browser, with no ads and no tracking.

Two details set Vivaldi apart for client setup. First the hosts are subdomained, so you enter imap.vivaldi.net and smtp.vivaldi.net rather than a bare vivaldi.net. Second your login method depends on two-factor. With it off you use your normal password or OAuth. With it on you need an app password. The same Vivaldi account also powers browser sync, the forum and Vivaldi Social.

How Vivaldi Login Works#

Vivaldi decides your client login by one setting, whether two-factor is on for your account. That single choice tells you which password to type.

Where to make an app password: turn on two-factor first, then open your Two-Factor Authentication page on your Vivaldi profile at login.vivaldi.net, choose App passwords and generate one for a mail client. Paste it into your client in place of your normal password.

Username is your full address: the username in every client is your complete address, such as you@vivaldi.net. The authentication method is normal password. That holds for your account password and for an app password alike.

OAuth is the smoothest path in the browser built-in Vivaldi Mail client when two-factor is off. In Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail or a phone, you use the password route with the server tables below.

New Account? Check Webmail Access#

Vivaldi has a rule that trips up new users more than any server setting. A brand new vivaldi.net account cannot use email right away. Since May 2023, access to Vivaldi Webmail runs on a reputation system, so a fresh account has to build standing in the Vivaldi community before the mailbox turns on.

IMAP will fail until webmail is active: if a new account keeps rejecting a correct password and server, the mailbox may not be switched on yet. Sign in at webmail.vivaldi.net first. If that works, your client will connect too.

You build reputation by using other Vivaldi services, such as posting on the Forum, sharing on Vivaldi Social, publishing a blog or running browser Sync. The exact threshold is kept private to keep spammers out. Accounts that had webmail before May 2023 keep it with nothing to do.

The built-in client is separate: the Vivaldi Mail app inside the browser does not wait for reputation. It reads any IMAP or POP3 account from day one. Only the vivaldi.net mailbox address is gated.

The browser client is ready at once. The vivaldi.net mailbox opens once a new account earns enough reputation.

Reputation grows as you use Vivaldi community services. Once it is enough, the mailbox opens at webmail.vivaldi.net.

Vivaldi IMAP Settings#

IMAP is the incoming protocol most people should use. It keeps your mail on the server so every device shows the same inbox.

Vivaldi POP3 Settings#

POP3 uses pop3.vivaldi.net on port 995 with SSL. Port 110 handles STARTTLS. Mind the 3 in the host name. POP3 pulls mail onto one machine and can remove it from the server, so IMAP is the better default. Not sure? See the comparison below.

Careful with POP3 delete settings. Some clients remove mail from the server after download. Check "leave a copy on the server" if you still want mail in webmail.

Vivaldi SMTP Settings#

Two secure options: Vivaldi supports both SSL and STARTTLS. The simple picks are 993 for IMAP, 465 for SMTP and 995 for POP3, all with SSL. If a client prefers STARTTLS, use 143, 587 and 110 in that order.

SMTP runs on smtp.vivaldi.net, port 465 with SSL or 587 with STARTTLS. If mail arrives but will not send, the outgoing side is where to look.

Set Up Vivaldi in Email Clients#

The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:

Outlook (Windows and Mac)

In Outlook choose File then Add Account. In new Outlook the same option lives under Settings and then Accounts.
Type your vivaldi.net address, expand Advanced options and switch on the manual setup checkbox.
Choose IMAP and enter imap.vivaldi.net on port 993 SSL for incoming, then smtp.vivaldi.net on port 465 SSL for outgoing.
Enter your password when Outlook asks. Use your account password, then an app password if two-factor is on.
Finish and send a test email to yourself to confirm both directions work.

Apple Mail (macOS)

Open Mail → Settings → Accounts → Add Account.
Select Vivaldi if listed, otherwise choose Other Mail Account.
Enter your name, full address and password, then continue.
If asked for servers, enter the IMAP and SMTP values from the tables above.
Enable Mail in the checkbox list and finish.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account.
Tap Other, then Add Mail Account. iOS has no Vivaldi preset.
Enter your full address and password, then tap Next.
Keep IMAP selected and set incoming to imap.vivaldi.net and outgoing to smtp.vivaldi.net if iOS asks.
Tap Save and wait for iOS to verify the account.

Android

Open your mail app (Gmail app, Samsung Email or another) → Add account.
Choose Other (IMAP) when your provider is not in the list.
Enter your full address and password. If automatic detection fails, pick Manual setup.
Enter the servers: imap.vivaldi.net on 993 SSL incoming, then smtp.vivaldi.net on 465 SSL outgoing.
Finish setup and pull down to sync your inbox.

Thunderbird

Open Thunderbird → Account Settings → Account Actions → Add Mail Account.
Fill in your name, full address and password, then select Continue.
Thunderbird usually finds the servers from your address. Confirm IMAP with imap.vivaldi.net 993 SSL and smtp.vivaldi.net 465 SSL if it asks.
If detection fails, choose Configure manually and enter the table values above.
Select Done. Folders sync on first open.

Vivaldi Webmail Settings#

Signature

Set in the Vivaldi webmail settings. A signature you save there appears on webmail messages alone. Each desktop client keeps its own.

Vacation Auto Reply

Set an away message in the Vivaldi webmail settings. The reply goes out from the server, so it keeps answering with every device switched off.

Filters and Folders

A filter built in the Vivaldi webmail runs on the server and files each message before a client downloads it. An Outlook rule fires only while Outlook is open.

Spam and Blocked Senders

Vivaldi filters spam server side. If a message goes missing, look in the webmail spam folder first, then adjust your allow and block lists.

Troubleshooting Vivaldi Connections#

On Vivaldi the failures usually trace to the host name, the 2FA password rule or the pop3 spelling. Find your symptom, then the fix.

Reader Reported Fixes

Match the password to your 2FA state. The most common Vivaldi mistake is a normal password after two-factor was switched on. Create an app password at login.vivaldi.net and paste it into the client. The login then clears.

Spell the POP3 host in full. If POP3 will not connect, check the host reads pop3.vivaldi.net with the 3. A plain pop.vivaldi.net does not resolve, which many older guides get wrong.

Run these in order. On Vivaldi the host spelling and the two-factor password behind most failures.

Moving to Vivaldi?#

Most people reach Vivaldi from Gmail, Outlook.com or an old address. None of that older mail moves across on its own. IMAP shows only what sits on the vivaldi.net server today, so older archives wait where they are until you bring them across.

Sign in through the provider's own window instead of typing a password into the app. The modern method most providers are moving to.
