IMAP is on the moment a mailbox exists, so nothing needs enabling. The value worth confirming is the server name. InMotion gives you two easy ways to read it.
Email Configuration Tool
Type your full email address into InMotion's Email Configuration Tool and it prints the exact incoming, outgoing and port values for that mailbox. This is the quickest route.
From cPanel
Open Email Accounts in cPanel, then look at Connect Devices next to the address. The Secure SSL/TLS block lists your server name, which usually ends in inmotionhosting.com.

Which Password to Use#
Two rules cover it. Always sign in with the full email address, never the cPanel username. For the password, a standard plan uses the mailbox password while business and reseller plans, which ship with two factor sign in, need an app password.
Email account password
The one you set in cPanel Email Accounts, not your cPanel login. A standard plan uses it in Outlook, Apple Mail and phone apps as is.
Lost it? Reset it under Email Accounts, then refresh each app.
App password (2FA plans)
Business class and reseller plans have two factor sign in on by default. A mail app cannot clear that step, so cPanel issues an app password to stand in for it.
If a right password keeps bouncing, your plan likely wants an app password.
Create an App Password in cPanel
- Open cPanel and find the Security area.
- Open the two factor or app password panel.
- Generate a fresh app password and label it for that device.
- Paste the code into the password box of your mail app.
Set Up InMotion Hosting in Email Clients#
The servers and ports are always the same. Only the menus differ. Jump to your app:
Outlook (Windows and Mac)
- In Outlook choose Add Account, then switch on manual setup under Advanced options.
- Select IMAP and enter your InMotion server name on 993 with SSL for incoming.
- Set the same server for outgoing on 465 SSL or 587 STARTTLS.
- Sign in with the mailbox password. A business or reseller plan wants an app password.
- Mail yourself a test line to confirm both directions.
Apple Mail (macOS)
- In Mail pick Add Account, then Other Mail Account.
- Give your name, InMotion address and password, then continue.
- Enter the server name from the config tool with SSL on both directions.
- Double check the secure ports so nothing leaves in the clear.
- Save and let the mailbox load.
iPhone and iPad
- In Settings open Mail, tap Mail Accounts then Add Account.
- Choose Other then Add Mail Account and fill in your details.
- Leave IMAP selected and put your InMotion server name in both server fields.
- Keep the secure ports iOS fills, since InMotion expects SSL.
- Tap Save so iOS can check the mailbox.
Android
- In your mail app tap Add account, then Other or IMAP.
- Fill your address and password. Move to manual setup if it stalls.
- Incoming is your InMotion server name on 993 with SSL.
- Outgoing uses that same server on 465 with SSL or 587 with STARTTLS.
- Save and swipe down to fetch your mail.
Thunderbird
- In Thunderbird open Account Actions then Add Mail Account.
- Type your name, InMotion address and password, then Continue.
- Let it probe, then check that IMAP with SSL is set.
- If the probe misses, enter the server name by hand from the config tool.
- Select Done and folders sync on the first open.
InMotion Hosting Webmail Settings#
Server settings link your apps. The options below govern how the mailbox behaves on its own. They live in InMotion webmail, which runs Roundcube at yourdomain.com/webmail.
Signature
Add one in the webmail settings. It shows on mail sent from webmail. A desktop client keeps its own signature.
Vacation Auto Reply
Set an autoresponder in cPanel with a start and end date. The server sends it, so it keeps running while your computer is off.
Filters and Folders
Create filters in cPanel Email Filters. A server rule files a message before any app fetches it. A rule inside an app runs only while that app is open.
Spam and Blocked Senders
InMotion runs SpamAssassin on incoming mail. Set the score and block senders in cPanel. Flagged mail drops into the junk folder for review.

Reader Reported Fixes
Let the config tool settle the servers. When a setup will not connect, feeding your address into the Email Configuration Tool returns the precise server name and ports. Copying those into the app removes the guesswork that trips most manual setups.
Enter the full address as the username. A rejected login on InMotion often comes from typing the cPanel username or the mailbox name alone. The username is always the complete you@yourdomain.com address.
Account Moved? Update Your Server Name#
In April 2026 a cPanel wide security flaw prompted InMotion to patch every server. The flaw sat in cPanel itself, not in your account. It hit every host running cPanel at once. Your website and mail kept running while the dashboard was locked for a short spell.
As part of the fix InMotion moved a subset of accounts to fresh hardware. A moved account gets a new server name, which matters for anyone whose mail app points at the old one.
Did your account move?
You got an email from InMotion Hosting System Administration with a subject that reads Account Move Complete. It lists your new server name, a new IP address and temporary cPanel and webmail links. No email means your account stayed put and nothing changes.
On the secure server name
A mail app set to the old secure##.inmotionhosting.com host stops connecting once the move finishes. Open the account settings and put the new server name on both incoming and outgoing.
Your address and password do not change, only the server name.
On mail.yourdomain.com
If your app uses mail.yourdomain.com and your domain points to InMotion, the name follows the move on its own. There is nothing to change.
The old server stays live for about 24 hours, so mail keeps flowing while you update.
Moving Mail In or Out?#
InMotion mail runs on plain IMAP, so a mailbox moves in or out like any cPanel account. The server holds every folder until the transfer is done.
Keep a copy first. Back up the mailbox ahead of a move. A note that arrives mid transfer can land on either side. A copy keeps you safe.

IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol. Reads mail that stays on the server, so all your devices see the same inbox, folders and read status.
POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3. Downloads mail to 1 device and can remove it from the server. Older method, still useful for local archives.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sends your outgoing mail. Every account needs it next to IMAP or POP3, which only receive.
SSL / TLS / STARTTLS
Encryption for the connection. SSL/TLS encrypts from the start (ports 993, 995, 465). STARTTLS upgrades a plain connection (port 587).
App Password
A code used in a mail app in place of the account password. InMotion business class and reseller plans need one since two factor sign in is on by default.

InMotion\'s web tool that takes your email address and prints the exact incoming, outgoing and port values for that mailbox.
cPanel
